I'm counting all vintage mold rereleases thru 2005.
I remember the era fondly because I was a young adult, with money, and no kids during the same time, so I could get any figure I wanted. Softer hands and improved paint techniques (whites of the eyes) were welcome. The best of the era can go toe-to-toe with the best of the vintage era. But I will also always remember how frustrating it was when the same figures would get repainted over and over, classic figures had to make do with replacement parts, and after '02 the classic figures took a back seat to the "new sculpt" O-ring figures that have not stood the test of time (with a few exceptions). |

Yes...lots of memories of the early 00's. Never actually "collected" any of them but I did dabble in grabbing a few from the series just to see how the quality was.
Fond memories of cutting class and going to TRU and hanging out by the 'Joe Stuff', actually had one third of a toy figure aisle dedicated to just Joe stuff back then!) I was big into the Star Wars (as was seemingly the entire toydom back then) waiting for the scheduled restock of the POTF/POTJ stuff. I honestly can recall how 'well run' TRU's were back then and they would actually schedule restocks of very specific assortment runs and if you wanted the Star Wars stuff you actually knew when they would restock and fill the aisles. But yeah, the Joe stuff of that era basically just... sat. Collected dust. Nobody seemed to care. Then came 25th....that was a different story. |

If it weren't for the Real American Hero Collection, I don't know that I would have been as willing to make the plunge into going all vintage a few years back. I felt like those figures along with the comic packs gave me a solid starting point and made the idea of filling out my collection seem more accessible.
And, my God, I was stupidly hyped for those two packs to start hitting. My Joe fandom was going strong in 94, and I was devastated to see everything end. The TRU revival was a glimmer of hope, but I didn't live next to a TRU, and I didn't really care for many of the figures. But the RAHC was something I could get anywhere. I think the first wave of two packs was probably my very first online order, and I vividly remember their arrival since they came on the same day my grandmother died.... Anyway, I use a lot of the RAHC and beyond figures with my vintage displays. In some cases, it's a matter of preferring the re-do over the original. I use a lot of the Comic Pack figures as my default versions on my displays (Comic Pack Duke, Hawk, Scarlett, and Zartan for instance). I've got an awareness that they're not from the original line, but that doesn't deter my enjoyment. |

I never grabbed anything between 1997 and 2002. I stopped truly collecting the original ARAH line around 1990. After that, I only grabbed a handful of figures (Low Light v2, Desert Scorpion, Crimson Guard Immortal, Ninja Force). I didn't get back into G.I. Joe collecting until the Joe Vs. Cobra line came out, because I liked the design. Once that series became Valor vs. Venom, I stopped again and just picked up a few months ago with Classified.

I really like those figures because they seem to be holding up better due to the slightly rubbery plastic - no elbow cracks/broken waist pieces. In many cases the re-use of original molds in newer more muted colors is also a big positive for that era. Last edited by HitandRun; 03-14-2022 at 08:02 PM.. |

For me, any of the o-ring/vintage mold stuff from the late-90s and early-2000s is part of the original run. I figure they're all from the same molds and from the same line, so why make distinctions. Plus, I just don't worry about subdividing and categorizing much.
I actually have a strong sense of nostalgia for that era, which feels so odd to me until I remember that was 20+ years ago! And then I just feel old. lol It actually still influences how I view GI Joe toys to this day. Like, it was hard to find certain Joe and Cobra vehicles back then (especially jets), and I spent a lot of time looking for reasonably priced GI Joe vehicles in good shape and new third-party stuff that would work. I remember 21st Century and BBI vehicles blowing up as a result, and shopping for The Corps stuff too, as well as Trendmaster's F-18 and shit like that. Anyway, to this day, I still feel a strong urge to buy any cool third-party vehicle that will work with Joes because of that era of scarcity. I also want to overbuy any new official GI Joe vehicles as a result too.
