If asked even 5 years ago, I'd have said that they were different eras, in fact, they we're the second to go when I'd decided to go all vintage back in the day.
Now, however, I get the same nostalgia that I do when I look at the original run, as they were what brought me back into collecting more than 20 years ago. They also mesh nicely with ARAH (especially the ones that were given the non-neon overhaul, as mentioned above.) Officially speaking, yes, they are a different era, as are the TRU 97-98 run... but for my collection purposes, I just consider them a small extension.

Packaging wise '97-'98 is distinct from '00-'02. The only connecting thread being the brand-name The Real American Hero Collection (though the former used The Cobra Enemy Collection as well).

They're distinct in a few ways, actually, but the most glaring differences would be the quality (the TRU reissues are pretty bad), and the limited availability- '97-'98 were a TRU exclusive series, whereas the what we know as RAHC brought GI Joe back to mass retail.

I like to think of 1997-2001 as the "Collectors Era," as nearly everything released then were repaints of vintage figures marketed directly to adult collectors. Toys in the 1982-94 vintage era were all marketed to kids (aside, perhaps, from the 30th Anniversary Collection).
However, there's no hard cutoff date. Hasbro continued to release o-ring repaints (as well as partial repaints with some new parts, or new figures kitbashed from lots of vintage parts) all the way through 2006. But those were mixed with the "New Sculpt" stuff without a clear branding distinction. For me, things just get too messy after 1994 and I prefer to leave that as the cutoff for my collection focus. |

In short, from what I understand, anyway, Hasbro acquired Kenner, and the TRU Joes were some of the first toys produced with Kenner's gear, and most importantly (and detrimentally), Kenner's plastics. They hadn't quite figured out how to do so properly at that point, which is why there are so many QC issues- backpacks that won't plug in (I've yet to come across a '97 Viper that the pack doesn't fall out of), warped parts, etc., etc. In the long run though, those softer plastics ended up being a benefit, though. You'd be hard pressed to find Joes from either line with broken thumbs. I'm sure they exist, but I've yet to see one.

I personally slot the 97-98 AND 2000-2006 classic o-ring figures in the same category as my ARAH collection. Others have made some really great points and there certainly is some area open to interpretation though. They are all based from molds that existed during the original run but with a more forgiving plastic and more muted colors. They also have a nice nostalgic factor for me as I can recall being excited to track down Joes again as an 18 year old collector.

Man, I SOOOOO miss heading to Wally and KayBee after work just to see what was there. To add to the experience, I only really started going online regularly back in '11 or '12, so I had no idea what figures were coming out- if it wasn't on the cardback, it was always a very pleasant surprise (errrrrr.... until the day I went in and saw pegs full of JvC ;)!
