My first purchase was a straight arm Stalker and a Ram cycle. I got when I was around 7 I think at the local TG&Y! I had him about a month and I tried putting his gun in his hands and half of his hand broke. I was so disappointed, but after that it was just his battle wound.
Once I had Stalker, I was hooked. I lived in a small town in Oklahoma at the time and I was in Gibsons and TG&Y weekly after that. I loved seeing new Joe's on the shelf. I even got in trouble at Gibsons for trying to steal a Scarlett figure. |

First was - I think - Crazy Legs. My brother and I missed out on some vintage Joes but we had a friend whose brother gave away a lot of his so we got a big selection of older classic figures from him (85 Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, Dreadnoks, Serpentor, etc.).

My family came to the U.S. from Hong Kong back in 82. I was not aware of GIJoes growing up in Hong Kong, but I knew Star Wars. The OG13 was bland and just looked like articulated Army Men to me, so that never caught my attention. 84 brought in a wave of more colorful and interesting characters and figures. So in 84 I bought my first Joe: Spirit. Mostly because he came with an eagle (Freedom...feeling patriotic I guess). The cartoon helped a lot on getting to know the characters too. That was the beginning of the addiction. I've since followed the instruction given on the back of the cards: "Collect Them All!"

When I was 10 I had already started asking relatives for money instead of gifts, so I could buy anything I wanted. Still, the one I remember actually saving money for, from school lunch, was my second Storm Shadow. I broke the leg on my first one, beyond repair - the metal joint snapped off. I had no spare figure to replace it, so this really drove me over the edge. Storm Shadow was one of my favorites. Well, near my school there was a small department store, with a few toys here and there. They had lots and lots of Storm Shadows, but they were waaaaay overpriced. I couldn't ask my mom to take me somewhere else and *look for* that toy, she would never do it. I had no choice, I had to "starve" for two or three weeks so I could buy me a new Storm Shadow. Totally worth it, bought it by myself, absolutely no questions asked. It felt awesome, like I could manage my own money from then on. And I ended up with two sets of ninja weapons, which was pretty cool.

My first GI Joe purchase was the 25th anniversary comic pack of Hawk and Scarlet, a good first step into the world of Joe

The first thing I got was Stalker, Short Fuze and Snake Eyes, whilst staying at my grandma's house. I remember losing SE's satchel in the car but getting later on.
After that is was a combination of my Friday allowance or birthday / Christmas stuff, but my first "adult" purchase was 1988 Storm Shadow. I was in 9th grade and making a little money helping my grandpa with landscaping. I had mostly been out of toys since 7th grade, even though I kept a lowkey interest. When I saw SS v2 in the urban camo I was like, "Okay, fuck friends and family and football and being cool and any outside opinions, I'm buying this figure". To this today that remains my favorite figure and sculpt. After that I bought a few more from the line and also got in TMNT in the late 80's. Fuck "growing up". |

Mine was a 1983 Snow Job. I bought him because he had a lot of gear. My next figure I bought (and first Cobra figure I ever owned) was a 1984 Scrap Iron. A 1982-83 Cobra Commander was the next one I bought. I have great memories of those figures.
