Hi everyone, sorry to make another post but I am back into joes and trying to recollect what I lost and recently had issues with damaging figures. Can you please share advice on the following:
1) cleaning joes I hear some use dish soap and polish? What are the best techniques and products? 2) rusty screws I have only ever taken the backs off but do we does anyone totally disassemble? pros/cons 3) storage. I have just used ziplocks but should I be upgrading to rigid acid free stuff? what should I be using? 4) tools anything handy? maybe a screwdriver that doesn't strip screws? 5) vehicle labels. Does everyone just strip and get repro? would be nice to clean but so much grime in the labels. My tiger string seems uncleanable beyond a point. The brown paint applied to it rubs off too easily. I know thats a lot but its because I love joes and want to do no further harm |

Dawn Dish Soap 2) rusty screws I have only ever taken the backs off but do we does anyone totally disassemble? pros/cons You can find replacement screws on eBay. You can dissemble to clean (and paint if you are doing a custom). 3) storage. I have just used ziplocks but should I be upgrading to rigid acid free stuff? what should I be using? I recommend acid free bags, with the figures kept in a dry, temperature regulated place. They should be kept out of the sun. 4) tools anything handy? maybe a screwdriver that doesn't strip screws? Precision or small screw driver set, fine needle nose pliers, pin drill, green stuff, paperclip wire for broken thumbs, fine forceps (tweezers), Xacto knife. 5) vehicle labels. Does everyone just strip and get repro? would be nice to clean but so much grime in the labels. My tiger string seems uncleanable beyond a point. The brown paint applied to it rubs off too easily. ToyHax.com (used to be cobra stickers) are good for repro decals. If dawn doesn't clean off the old sticker residue, you can try a little goo gone and elbow grease. I know thats a lot but its because I love joes and want to do no further harm

Dish soap and a soft toothbrush for general cleaning.
For stickers with a lot of crud around the edges, try carefully scraping the dirt off with a toothpick and just a tiny drop of Goo Gone. If necessary, use the Goo Gone to totally remove the sticker, clean it off, and then re-apply with a glue stick. Be careful with replacement screws bought off eBay. If they're the wrong size and you tighten too much, you can crack a figure's torso or leg. Note that there is no one standard screw size for every figure. They varied slightly from year to year, and the leg screws are different than the back screws. If the head of the screw isn't stripped, you may be better off applying rust remover and then reusing it. (It's also worth saying that rust doesn't eat plastic, so a mildy rusty screw won't do too much damage to a figure.) |

I usually soak the screws and t hooks in vinegar for a few days, if it has rust, to knock the rust off.

1) cleaning joes I hear some use dish soap and polish? What are the best techniques and products? Let the parts dry for 24 hours and reassemble with a new O-ring...should be good for another 30-40 years in proper storage or on display. Quote:

There's two real sources left for GI Joe repro stickers....ToyHax and Rattler Repros. Both are good and I own several sets from both. But before you strip the stickers, make sure you can get replacements. While most Joe toys have options for replacement stickers, not all do (i.e. no one makes stickers for the 2008 RHINO as far as I am aware). Last edited by Cryoguns; 09-23-2021 at 05:47 PM.. |

I have an ARAH Dial Tone whose o-ring rotted. The parts are in good shape, however, the screw, still in the back, is rusted AND stripped. Any ideas on how to remove it?

Careful drilling is the only option there, I'm afraid. Truthfully, he's still on the lower end price-wise, I'd grab another torso myself.

Another useful tip: When replacing O-rings, be sure to pre-stretch the rubber a bit before installing so that the tension is there, but not so tight it snaps anything. I just place a new O-ring over closed pliers and then open them to stretch the ring out ever so gently into a slightly oval shape.
