It's hard to remember, but I think it was Tomax and Xamot for Christmas in 1985. The only other Joes I had as a kid aside from these two were Flint, Roadblock and the hooded Cobra Commander that I sent away for.

Scarlett when I was a kid.
I got the 25th Rattler for X-mas from my step-son. That's what got me back into Joe's.

I can't remember the first figure I actually purchased. I do have a very specific memory of getting Monkey Wrench one night while out running errands with my parents as a really young kid...had to be 4 or 5.
I can only remember ever buying one figure with my money as a kid - Battle Corps Flint. |

I have a distinct memory of going to Kmart and getting Scoop, AlleyViper and the Desert Fox when I was younger (they may well have been among my earliest Joe toys).
As far as first memory of buying my own? It was in 2003 and I was getting back into toys in general thanks to the relaunches for He-Man and Transformers. The 80s were back and I was getting more comfortable actually buying toys again as a young adult. I picked up Duke, Cobra Commander and Snake Eyes Mission Discs in late 2003 at ShopKo for $5. Picked up Zartan, Firefly and Roadblock for like, $3 when the store was clearing them out.

My first figure was Storm Shadow V2. I was immediately drawn to him for his color scheme, the fact the he was a ninja, and his accessories. I loved everything about him, and he’s still my favorite Joe to date. I’m typically a loose collector, but I love this figure so much I got 2 loose version, one for display and one to play with, a Hasbro carded version, and a Funskool carded version.
My first vehicle was the Swampmasher. I know it’s not a fan favorite, but I really love it as a kid because it was easy to handle and the wheel configuration allowed for play on a lot of surfaces that some other vehicles didn’t. It was a perfect small vehicle to me, and was well armed. Its still one of my favorite vehicles to date, and I ended up getting 2 of them. I also enjoyed having Storm Shadow V2 man it as that is how the commercial presented it. |

First figure was straight arm Breaker. Couldn’t say if I just liked him or if I picked the best out of what was left on pegs that day.
Second was straight arm Shortfuse. Never expected the leader to come with a vehicle (still think that was a bad choose). I thought Shortfuse might be the leader but not with a mortar. Third was a few weeks allowance and a lucky trip to Toys R Us. Grabbed straight arm RnR, SE and Stalker. It was at that point that I felt I had a reputable team. Fourth was straight arm Flash but didn’t use him much after 82. Got the HAL Christmas of 82 with straight arm Grand Slam.

Damn I envied all you older kids back in the day, my earliest figures were 85/86 ones, and I missed out on many from those years too. Those earlier figures had a special mystique to me.

I started collecting in ‘89, but was vaguely aware of some figures from earlier waves only because I went to a birthday party years before where the American Birthday boy had them (Joes weren’t common in Asia at that time), and I seemed to remember seeing cobra troopers, Snow Serpent and the trouble bubble… as after that, Joes that had that Cobra blue and grey, and vehicles with that light grey, had mystique to me too. I was lucky to start collecting in ‘89 however, because I managed to get the ‘88 figures as they were still available, and it’s my favorite wave…. It I’m sure everyone feels that way about the waves they came in on. I’m sure the ‘90 kids loved those neon figures every bit as much as those early ‘80s kids loved those straight arms.

Don't get too jealous of us when we're raking in all those sweet, sweet AARP discounts and free senior coffees in a few years.

My first was a straight arm Flash bought from an OTASCO tire/hardware store. It seemed like forever before I got another figure/vehicle at Christmas which was the HAL & Grand Slam
