I’m sure this is a topic that comes up time and time again, but I have been thinking about this after watching some of the great “playmotion” videos in the Gijoburg YouTube channel.
There is no right or wrong, just personal preference, but I can think of a few different ways people enjoy their collections. Feel free to add to any that I may have missed: 1) Putting them in a shelf: Basically line them up, pose them, and enjoy just having and looking at them. 2) Creating dioramas: Creating scenes by posing them in different scenarios, in action poses, on shelves or in environments etc. 3) Creating scenes for the sake of taking photos: Taking them outside, making scenes inside, creating situational scenes that suggest storylines. 4) Creating video stories: creating storylines and videoing them as a way to allow you to purposefully play with your figures and vehicles, but also create video that others can enjoy. 5) Playing with your collection by yourself or with other adults: Play can have broad definitions (posing figures, putting weapons in and out of hands hand holsters could be considered play), but I more specifically mean how people played with these toys as kids, getting outside into environments and allowing imagination to create stories as the toys are manipulated etc. 6) Playing with your collection with your kids: same as above, except doing it with your child/children. So basically, how do you interact with your toy collection? I’m going to guess that we all “played” with our toys as kids, but many, if not all, moved away from “play” as we aged, either due to other interests, feeling like we out grew that form of play, feeling societal pressure that to play with toys is immature... but what I really appreciate about the potential for what Gijoburg is doing with their “playmotion” videos is that it allows you to enjoy the creativity and exercise your imagination through play, with the purpose of creating video content... which seems like a more “acceptable” way for adults to “play” in the eyes of society. Take away the video aspect, and it’s essentially just playing like a kid would. Just to be clear, I’m not of the opinion that there’s anything wrong with “playing” with your toys as a kid would, I personally feel like it’s a positive thing and mentally stimulating, but I do acknowledge that some people feel weird about it as adults... and it seems that video and photo documentation is a way that maybe some use to justify their “play”. I for one try from time to time to play with my toys, photos or not, because I find that it’s the best way for me to have their characters and vehicles come to life. |

With a dash of pepper and a cold beer...........
Seriously though, Most of mine are in storage bins unfortunately. I am thinking about opening them though. I dabble in customizing and would like to start doing dio's. Problem is finding the time and place.

I think for me they are just nostalgic artwork. Walkin in that room takes me back to a simpler time. Currently they are all sealed in the boxes or on cards but since my boys are grown men now I'll be expecting grandkids, this entire collection will be played with by them one day just as I enjoyed them when I was younger.

My childhood joes are long gone to the yard sale gods of the 90s... But I'm back collecting classified. I have them on a shelf in front of the boxes. But I'm thinking about doing a diorama to show them off better. I don't think i'd play with them like I did as a kid. But who knows if another lockdown happens...

I have a diorama planned, and I like to customize here and there. One thing I enjoy doing when I have the time is taking them out doors for photos. Or to set them up and look at them. However this Florida heat is a bitch, and in about 20 min they are all loose and gummy.
I don't "play" necessarily, but in general I do enjoy setting them up as if they are completing certain missions. |

I mainly have them on shelves, but I do occasionally have a massive high stakes battle. The Joes always win, but they always suffer heavy losses before barely pulling off an action movie type last attempt that ends up working
