I truly believe hasbro hates money. The only way our beloved toyline EVER has a chance of mainstream buy in again is bringing back the vintage design. Just my humble opinion and needed to rant it out

I grew up with ARAH so I will always love them but I’m not sure a major corp will produce figs with a breakable band holding the figs together.
I would completely support your angle though. |

I would love if they just released one or two packs of o-ring figures. Maybe sets of five or six again like they did with those Valor vs Venom team sets. I don't mind if they release some repaints as long as they aren't the same figures they've already repainted and released a few times. I don't need any more o-ring Firefly figures, that is for sure.

Well, the Classified 6" line is doing extremely well at retail, sooooo, Hasbro already proved this wrong. Sorry to burst your bubble. I miss the o-ring figures also, but the truth is that the classic design isn't "The only way our beloved toyline EVER has a chance".

I am 100% with you on bringing back ARAH O-Ring. I just want the head sculpts to be more on the same line with the vintage ones-- not the botox looking pre-25th anniversary comic line that just doesn't blend in with the vintage figures both colors and sculpt. But I have a feeling this is merely wishful thinking.

I too would love to see ARAH O-ring figures come back, but the reality is Hasbro won't do it. If Hasbro is going to bring back a 3 3/4 line, they are going to bring back modern era sculpts, because it's a safer bet in their minds to try and appeal to kids, who are more familiar with modern articulation, while appealing to "some" adult collectors nostalgia by hitting the basic design elements of the original figures. I would have hoped that Hasbro would have listened to what collectors want, considering the successes of the retro Star Wars and Real Ghostbusters releases, but it seems that they're really not interested in the collectors. 6" figures are the modern standard for kids action figures, so that seems like Hasbro's focus. Both Classified and the new Snake Eye's movie lines are both 6", so that should really tell you the direction Hasbro has decided on. It's a real shame, because I personally feel the 3 3/4 scale is superior as a toy line, because it allows for a lot more flexibility to make vehicles and play sets, which allow the figures to interact in different ways a lot more... but that's just not the current trend, and Hasbro is firmly on the 6" bandwagon. I hate to admit it, but the days of new O-ring Joes are gone, and Hasbro are not interested in making what a lot of collectors want... it's about trying to match GI Joe to the new trends (look at a number of the new figure designs, they might as well be Fortnite or Rouge One figures), as opposed to embracing what made GI Joe toys cool and fun to play with in the first place.

Hate to break it to ya but almost no one outside of the Tank cares about O rings. You may get a few random nostalgia buys, but you will be hard pressed to get anyone to jump on board and be a full blown collector. Also, from what I've seen in my 13 years as a Joe collector is that most fans want more ME figures and only a handful of fans want O-ring, so its not necessarily "what the fans want". I personally would like more o-rings, but I know its not something that will do exceptionally well.
Classified is doing super well and has brought in lots of Marvel Legends fans who normally won't collect Joe (and before you ask, no they are not on this site. They're mainly on instagram). O-ring is NOT the "only way for Joe to succeed". Joe is doing better than it has for decades, and will likely only do even better after the Snake Eyes movie releases. With the momentum of Classified and the movie, changing gears to o-rings will only kill the brand, it won't somehow make it "have a chance at the mainstream". The greatest way NOT to have a chance at the mainstream is to make remakes of outdated old figures that mainly appeal to an aging demographic. And even if they do work (mainly just for nostalgia), it is not somehow the "only" way for GI Joe to return. Also, if Hasbro hated money, they would be out of business right now. The reason they barely bother with GI Joe IS because they love money--Joe has continually lost them money in the past and is seen as a bad investment to them. The fact they are even bringing it back is a gamble. Last edited by Yeet; 05-21-2021 at 11:49 PM.. |

Even though I do believe the ME fan base is large, I'm not sure I believe that there isn't a large fan base that wants O-ring. If you look at O-ring Joe prices on Ebay right now, they're more than double what they were about 3-4 years ago. If demand was low, the prices for O-ring Joes and vehicles wouldn't be so high. I not saying that O-ring is the way to keep GIJoe alive, as obviously the current trend is 6" across all action figure toy lines, but I do believe that if an O-ring line was introduced, it would be sold out.
Yes, nostalgia plays a large part in collecting O-ring figures, but from a playability perspective, even though O-rings have less detail and articulation compared to ME 3 3/4" Joes, I find them to be more solid, can hold their weapons better, and can stand up better too. Something I've been asking myself is, is there such a thing as too much detail and articulation when it comes to toys? I find myself looking in awe at the 6" joes for all their detail and dynamic articulation, but I find it harder to relate to them as a fun toy to be played with, and more a piece of art. I think there's something to be said for the limits to the articulation and detail on the O-rings, because the lack of detail forces you to fill it in in your own mind, and the limits to the articulation stop you from being over fussy with poses, which means potentially more active playing with the figure. Personally I feel like both O-ring and ME 6" have there place in contemporary times, because to me they serve different purposes. O-ring joes are to be played with, where as ME 6" are more like adult collectables to be posed and put on a shelf. |
