Despite differences in size or construction, almost every single "modern" G.I. Joe toy is a remake of something from the '80s. There are almost no new characters. They're even wearing essentially the same outfits, maybe jazzed up a little with extra detail but definitely designed with the sole intent of reminding fans of the originals. Hasbro's entire business model for G.I. Joe is to tread on nostalgia. I don't necessarily disagree with your main point. A return of o-ring figures will probably not launch a new G.I. Joe renaissance. But I do find your logic for drawing that conclusion faulty. |

To be honest, the fact joy thing that will renew a GI Joe renaissance is a successful movie franchise and shows aimed at kids with enough toys on the pegs to attract kids. I don’t think it has anything to do with 6” vs O-ring, because if GI Joe was marketed correctly, and they had enough toys, selling them wouldn’t be an issue. Look at Transformers, they come in all sorts of wacky scales and levels of complexities aimed at different age groups. Look at Star Wars and Ghostbusters, they both created vintage style figures and highly articulated versions in versions scales, and they were a hit. This shows that O-ring Joes could have life at retail, especially if that meant vehicles. One of the things that made the Jurassic World toy line successful is the fact that they got vehicles and dinosaurs to interact with the figures. It’s a lot more fun to create universes where figures can interact with stuff, and 6” figures just really limit that potential.

Yes, it is possible to have too much articulation. A lot of modern action figures look garbage because they have way too many joints and in stupid places like the goddamn chest hinges that plague modern Joes and Marvel figures.

I totally agree. I remember picking up 1 25th Joe at retail, it was Techno Viper, but his torso was covered up by uniform, and since it made his torso look thicker, his thighs didn’t stick out as much... but his elbows looks like crap and his hands kept falling off. On other ME Joes without some sort of torso covering, I agree the ab crunch looks awful. the top of the legs stick out of the hips way too much, and the elbows look hugely deformed. In many cases toy makers efforts to make toys ever more complex, they lose sight of what makes a toy fun and playable in the first place. There should be a balance between articulation, figure stability and solidarity and detail.

Marvel Legends, especially the older ones are worst for that, makes the figures look horrible, main reason back then is why I bought so much DC Direct and not so much Legends!

Yeah, Hasbro don’t think that way which is stupid of them, making all the classic 6 inchers ARAH is printing money!

Hasbro is having a lot of success with the Star Wars Retro Collection line, they are remakes of the old Kenner figures and some all new figures (Tarkin and Snowspeeder Pilot Luke) that Kenner never made. With the latest wave, they have taken characters from The Mandalorian show and made them in the old Kenner style.
Now would be the perfect time to bring back a limited line just like the Star Wars Retro Collection. Enough time has passed since the last time we had any o-ring figures, and we're getting older. Nostalgia is hitting gen X hard. Given some of the rumors about Hasbro hearing fans wanting o-ring figures, there may be some hope that next year for ARAH's 40th we might get something. Maybe another take on the old TRU Stars and Stripes Forever box set. |
