Here's another weird one. Dee-Jay's accessories are listed as: comm-tech station, laser rifle, loudspeaker backpack, hose, plug (2), antenna.
Aren't the "comm-tech station" and "loudspeaker backpack" the same thing? |

There isn't one included with any of the Sneak Peek action figures, either those manufactured by Hasbro, or those made by the GIJCC.
It's just one of those silly fun facts about the G.I. Joe line, and as you've already noticed, other G.I. Joe action figures had similar irregularities with the cardbacks due to the copywriter being given bad info. If you really want a laugh, look at the 1991 Mortar Man, codenamed Downtown. (the joke's punch-line: He doesn't come with a Mortar.)

One employee most likely listed it as a "walkie-talkie", while another made a note on the same paper that it is a "multiband radio transponder unit". When 3DJoes listed the parts, they attempted to clarify by adding their own word additions of "with handle and clip" so that people could identify the radio. Because there existed a microphone piece included with the action figure, which was never mentioned on the cardback itself, 3DJoes listed that as well on their site. You could call it either term which you feel comfortable with, but the reality is that Sneak Peak has never needed a "walkie-talkie" on a mission, any more than he would need a spatula or a frying pan. Regarding the Downtown action figure accessory, you are correct!

The toymakers labeled it as the Variable Range Optical Field Scanning Device, but in real life, it's called a Military Trench Periscope with Monopod.
It's older technology, of course, but based upon something that really existed (Warsaw Pact stuff, if I remember correctly). I would assume that this was a limitation in the tooling and manufacturing abilities available in 1987, but then I look at all the other small, multi-part accessories that came with G.I. Joe figures or vehicles at the time. Psyche-Out's "variable wave field projector with ELF sonic generator" and "2 'big ear' sonic receivers with wrist clips" are just as elaborate as Sneak Peek's periscope, yet I can believe that he'd be able to carry them on his person. How is it that Hasbro couldn't make something that looks like this? It just seems comical to me that a guy named Sneak Peek would have to lumber around carrying a giant green periscope. That's not terribly sneaky. |

So I Googled images of military trench periscopes and, no surprise, they appear to be much smaller and more lightweight than the giant, clanking submarine periscope that Sneak Peek lugs around.
I would assume that this was a limitation in the tooling and manufacturing abilities available in 1987... They seem to have wanted to go with that stiff plastic material for the toy, but avoided handles or other narrow pieces which could break and become sharp or dangerous for small children to handle... (child safety precautions would be my guess for the reason). G.I. Joe seems to use many Cold War items and equipment, so my guess is that photographs of the Russian Army PP-61AM Sight Optic Periscope Field Glass or similar long range high magnification periscopes were the influence used by the artist/designer, rather than any of the smaller World War One equipment.

all this time I thought the periscope, looking thing was suppose to be one of those huge IR illuminators.

Still looks way smaller than Sneak Peek's equipment. I feel like what happened is that the original concept designer said, "Let's give him a field periscope." But the person down the line tasked with designing the accessories only knew of periscopes from old submarine movies, so this is what we wound up with. Yes, that is the example of a periscope from the time period I mentioned.
Using a Google Image search, you probably noticed that is the only photograph which referenced the size of that equipment, and only because somebody was recently trying to sell it. All other photos only showed the equipment item by itself. Now, transport your mind back to 1986 when the designers were first working on that toy piece for the G.I. Joe product line. A solitary photograph in a book or magazine... no internet or Google images available. The artist/designer would have no idea of the size of a Military Trench Periscope, and so Sneak Peek ends up with the cumbersome piece of equipment that he did.

The other thing that kills me is that, when the Collector's Club Figure Subscription Service tried to re-do classic characters in modern-era sculpts circa 2017, they didn't actually modernize the designs any beyond changing the build style and articulation. Hence we wound up with this nonsense again: See also Scoop still lugging around a giant 1980s video camera three decades later. |
