I have big news.
A friend and I are working on converting my G.I. Joe inventory spreadsheet into a database we can host on the web, so people can track their vintage G.I. Joe collections online. Yes, I'm aware that YoJoe.com has a "My Collection" feature, but it's a paid subscription service and that site is badly neglected by its current owners, with a bunch of important pages inexplicably missing and no plan to fix them. The intent is for our site to be free, and to be more detailed and more accurate than YoJoe's ever was. I'm looking for feedback on what information and features people would want in a collection tracker like this. My spreadsheet currently has the following fields: Code Name Also Known As Version Variation Category Year of Release Country of Release Military Specialty File Name Affiliation Sub-Group Vehicle Distinguishing Characteristics Repaint of Existing Item? Mail Order / Retailer Exclusive? Trivia YoJoe.com Link 3DJoes.com Link DeSimone Guide Item # Accessories 1-14 This is a lot of data and not all of it is needed in a collection tracker. Some will be filtered out. Definitely included will be an ability to track every figure (including variations) as well as an itemized breakdown of accessories. For example, if you have Tunnel Rat but are missing one of his little flashlights, you can put that item individually on a Want List for easy reference when searching eBay. What other info would you like to see or to track? Should we include options to plug in date purchased and price paid? That seems like it would be hard for people who may have bought some or all of these figures decades ago. Feedback is appreciated. We also don't have a name for the site yet. I have a bunch of ideas for that but none that are clicking. It has to be a name or phrase that isn't already taken by another site (or social media channel), and should be easily recognizable as related to G.I. Joe, even for casual fans. I'd rather avoid titles that are too obscure or too much of a deep-dive into Joe lore. Suggestions are welcome. I also want to note that this site is not intended to be competition for 3DJoes. Carson does amazing work there and I've referenced his site heavily in making my spreadsheet. Every entry will include a link to the relevant page on 3DJoes. I'm just trying to offer my own contribution to the Joe collecting community. In addition to the database, the plan is to also provide a holistic look at the vintage G.I. Joe era, from figures to the comic book to every episode of the cartoon, in chronological order as they were originally released. |

Outstanding idea! Are you keeping this list strictly to ARAH from Hasbro or could this be used for customs whether self-made or factory (ie Black Major)?

Customs and factory customs will be very hard to track. They're not well documented that I can find. If you're asking about the possibility of manually creating entries from your own collection, that's something we can look into but probably won't be in the initial build. Good idea! |

Would anyone else find this project useful? Should I start a new thread for it?

OK, guess I spoke too soon. Looks like this project may be irrelevant now. Sigh.
