Are the Walmart vehicles floating around any good or are they junk?
Normally I stay away from any new release stuff-I'm all about vintage. But I've been thinking about trying the awe striker. How close is the vehicle to the original? It's obvious the figures different.

I say yay. Both the Hiss and Awe are great not sure how I feel about fang yet. While you are here though you may want to check up on the originalpicker1 thread. He is making some pretty hefty allegations about you. He also somehow roped me into it by contacting me via ebay. I told him to come on here and have an adult discussion with you directly but he just continued to go on about you and his personal issues.

I really like the AWE Striker and the Hiss. I haven't seen the Fang in person yet.

I've not had the pleasure of seeing any retro save Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow in hand yet, but based on all that I've read/seen, they're 25th/ME reissues, which makes them slight improvements on the originals. One thing to note, the foot pegs will be narrower than the ARAH we know and love.

UPDATE: On further inspection the Retro AWE doesn't have that rib down the center of the front hood. It actually makes the United States and the Star decal go on much better. In my book it's an improvement. The 25th was the same I believe. Also it looks like connection piece for the canon on top has been redesigned from the vintage. That was a weak point on the vintage so I'm cool with it. The change seems to be an improvement. The HISS has a change to the mount on the turret. The outer facing side between the canons has the access door removed and is just flat. It's rather bland. The rest of the HISS looks the same but I did not compare them side by side and restored my vintage HISS 5 years ago so I cold be off on that. Again the plastic feels higher quality to the 25th release but not as impressive as the AWE Striker. I am happy with my HISS (LOVE THE BOX) but not as happy as I am with my AWE Striker. No buyer's remorse what so ever. The decals on both are very nice/ good quality and tolerate some readjusting. The Awe Striker decals are almost all vintage accurate except the gas cap decal. The Hiss decals felt vintage accurate but again it's been 5 years since I restored my childhood Hiss so I can't swear by it. The figures are really a matter of opinion. I swapped the head on my Crankcase-it's a really lovely sculpt but it looks like a hipster bar tender. It may make for a good repaint for RnR. I don't understand why they'd do a new head sculpt and get it wrong with the full beard? To me the SAS trained Joe should look like Watson, a mustachioed, thick forearmed brawler of a Scotsman. The Hiss Driver looks good but I was happy enough with the 25th one.

The FANG is going to be a tough pill to swallow for me. I LOVE the FANG. It was my second cobra vehicle that I got in 83, my brother didn't get one so it was all the more special to me. I love the Cobra Officer and him being on the the vintage box made it that much cooler. It's one of the only 25th vehicles that I kept multiples of. What kills me is that we didn't need a pilot with it. The vintage one didn't come with a pilot and I don't care for the new pilot. The pilot ruins the vintage box art. I would have appreciated no pilot and using the release of the FANG to cross sell Cobra Officers carded in wave 2. The SDCC 2017 Missile base build was ok. The 25th FANG was a great reissue with improvements to the vintage one's more fragile components. That new FANG looks terrible. The retro AWE Striker was a model for what the retro line should be. Vintage accurate vehicles (25th versions were great) with maybe improved drivers. The retro FANG is an example of how to do it wrong. I may feel different with the FANG in hand but right now I'm holing onto my 25th FANGS tightly.

I never had an original AWE, but people seem to like it a lot better than the 25th AWE.
I'm quite happy that they beefed up the pins that control the turret tilt on the HISS. Most of the vintage ones I would come across had those pins broken or I was always worried that I would break mine if I moved them too much. I wasn't buying Joes when the 25th stuff came out and by the time I started buying any modern era vehicles, the 25th FANGS had gotten really expensive. Even if I don't end up liking the retro one as much, I'm glad that I have the opportunity to get them for a lot less than getting older ones would cost. |
