I recently purchased a 1983 Skystriker that is in excellent condition aside from one small issue (which the seller did warn me about). The canopy doesn't quite fit on the plane snugly. It's too short and leaves a gap between the canopy hinge and the rear pilot seat. It looks like it actually never fit.
Every Skystriker picture I can find online shows the canopy filling the whole length of the cockpit. Like this one from 3DJoes: As far as I can tell, this is a purely vintage piece with no reproduction parts. I don't believe this is a canopy from a later retooled Skystriker, because that would have a taller arch to fit the larger figures. Unfortunately, the seller was not the original owner and doesn't know its full history. Anyone here have any insight into this? Was this a common problem? Weird... Factory defect or a shoddy repro part maybe?

I'm thinking factory defect at the moment. I don't believe it's a repro part because the whole plane, including the canopy, had a fair amount of old dirt and grime on it when I received it. Although the owners had kept it complete and in good structural condition, this was clearly a played-with toy that looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the early 1980s.
I'd think that someone who went to the trouble of buying a repro part would be a collector who wouldn't dirty it up afterwards. The pilot name stickers on the canopy were particularly grubby before I scrubbed them. Last edited by Josh Z; 08-28-2020 at 06:17 PM.. |

there are two variations of the original skystriker.
your canopy might go to the other one https://www.yojoe.com/vehicles/83/skystriker/

My jet only came with one parachute, and it doesn't really seem like there'd be enough room to put a 'chute behind the back seat. So if anything, I'd think this cockpit would be shorter than the two-'chutes version and the shorter canopy ought to fit on it. |

I have a question, as I don't know why there would be a long and short version of the canopy in the first place.
Though my question regarding the hinge part, does it open properly? Or for that matter move up and down without problems? I would think with the gap in that section would cause problems. Also with it closed, does the edges from the canopy sit over the open? I only ask, as every Skystriker I have had they canopy was a little wider than the opening. Might point to this being a defect or someones attempt at casting (didn't account for shrinkage). I know of a few changes that were made on the Striker hull, but I don't remember any of them having a smaller cockpit. I have 2 different hull versions. Both versions mainly are outlined on Yojoe, but would add that the wing lever sections are different also. It would be very easy to over look that difference, unless you have them in hand. Though with things being easier to obtain and the web being what it is, new stuff always surfaces. Many things I would have never guessed had any versions have them. Maybe there is a shorter cockpit version Skystriker out there. Then there are the foreign market, but again I don't know but a faction of that. Only got into foreign Joes within the last 15 years. Sorry I couldn't help more, but would like to know more myself. momaw nadon |

I don't notice any overhang on the sides like you describe. It seems to be the right width. I had a Skystriker when I was a kid (sold long ago). My memory of it was that the length of the canopy fit snugly at both the front and back. I do not remember it being too wide. As I mentioned earlier, I don't believe this one is a custom or repro part, because it appeared to have 30 years of dirt and sticker gunk on it before I cleaned it up. It looks like a professionally manufactured piece without any telltale signs of being a custom job or 3D printed. Also, when I look at it closely, the whole piece has a lot of very fine scratches, presumably due to being played with. Last edited by Josh Z; 11-05-2022 at 03:24 PM.. |

Not saying it is too wide, as it like the canopy frame creates a little edge that doesn't flow smooth into the fuselage. I would guess it was made like that on purpose by Hasbro to allow for something to grip upon opening. It doesn't take away from the looks as its more felt. If that makes cents.
Thanks for the extra pictures and taking the time to get them. It looks right when opened. Does it slide back some when opening? Wish I was local, as I would like to see this one in person and bring some extras to compare to it. Hopefully someone can bring light to this and you get some answers. momaw nadon |

I wonder if this is simply a case of plastic shrinkage? Last edited by Josh Z; 11-05-2022 at 03:24 PM.. |
