Think back to "the day" (80's-90's) and flipping through the new toy catalog, checking out the new card-backs, or even seeing the new TV commercials. There were probably one or two figures/vehicles that caught your eye and made you think: "whoa! That looks cool! Can't wait to get that!"
Yet when you got it, you were kinda' disappointed and let down. Not saying BAD toys or figures... cuz' that's a different topic... just ones that you, personally, were super-excited to get. Then you finally got it and you didn't like it as much as you though you would. I'll start with a few: -1985 Flint figure. Flint first appeared in the "Revenge of Cobra" mini-series in the fall of 1984 and almost stole the show. My friends and I described him as a combo of Stalker (beret) and Rock n' Roll (ammo belts). Couldn't wait to get his figure! Yet his figure's beret looked odd and his face seemed as if he had had too many alcoholic beverages. -1984 Watchtower. This showed up on the new TV commercial and it looked awesome. "Whoa! It's like a mini base! Need to get that". However, when I got it, it seemed quite worthless. In scale, it was maybe as tall as two figures and not nearly as cool as I had expected. -1985 Cobra Bunker. Seemed like another cool "mini base"... but it had an odd scale and didn't prove very "playable", despite the fact that it was supposed to break apart. Quite lame. I usually only used it as a prop when I needed a door. -1984 Vamp Mark 2. I started a separate thread for this, a few years ago. The main thing was the color being brown, instead of the tan that was on the box (and on the accompanying Clutch figure). -1984 Scrap Iron figure. Part of it was that Scrap-Iron was never developed in the cartoon or comic. I was so excited to get him, but never found a comfortable use for him. -1983 Destro figure. Seemed like Cobra had their own version of Dr. Doom! He was incredibly cool in both the cartoon and the comic. Yet his figure's skinny legs and over-sized head made it hard to take him seriously. -1983 GI Joe Headquarters. "Um...couldn't you just walk around and attack from the back?" "Dammit!" Although it was cool to have a garage for the VAMP and MOBAT. -1987/88 BattleForce 2000 Marauder. Seemed cool, but once I put it together, I thought: "it looks like a parade float" and never got that out of my mind. -1982 Zap figure. He had a BAZOOKA, how could that possibly suck? Simple, it didn't fit too well in his arms, and you had to extend one arm all the way, which looked ridiculous. If you tried to position it, differently, you probably broke his thumbs. I always felt that this figure and weapon were one of the main reasons they developed the "swivel-arm battle grip".

Cobra Bunker was definitely too fragile, but it looked cool if you didn't touch it!

Yeah, there were a few disappointments like The Apache AH-74. It looked great in catalogs, but when I had in hand it was bad, really bad. But for sure what did not disappoint was the original Night Raven. It looked great in the catalog, amazing when I got for Christmas and even today I am awe by its pure Awesomeness.

The FLAK. How did you get it anywhere and my seat kept falling off because a tab broke during assembly.
Also Zap. I bet I had four SA versions because people kept buying him as a gift.

Fort America and the Sonic Fighters Desert Apache.
Fort America's gimmick stunk and when it was in vehicle mode it wasn't much better. With the desert apache it was how out of scale it was - that was one of the very few vehicles that my parents bought me for no reason (birthday/Christmas etc.) and I still remember being underwhelmed as a 10 year old once it was assembled. |

Also never crazy about Flint's head sculpt.
Or Lady Jaye's for that matter. Cobra Bunker was only good for falling apart. MOBAT's scale and lack of figure interaction. And Retroblasting channel pointed out, replacing the batteries got old and without battery power it couldn't move. The 1983 Gliders were trash, easily breakable foam garbage. The Sharc, well it was used heavily in the toon by people not Deep Six. But it's only made for him to lie down in. Then they recolored it later without Deep Six, no mods...figures roll around inside. Also those torpedos fell off. Sea Ray always felt like it was gonna break when you split it in two parts. BF 2000 future fortress idea, poor executed. Metal Head was cool until his leg tabs break off. Destro's Dominator, flimsy and fragile. 2002 version not much improved. |
