When I was a kid and didn't understand the military significance of the term "beach head", I actually thought the figure was named for his really large head. Ha.

I definitely thought the original line was mostly disappointing, due to the general conformity of most of the figures. When they expanded in 84-85 and added a lot more color and variety, it was far better. I definitely think that the Joe figures got a lot better from 84-90. However, some of the Cobra figures became a little more weird and silly(i.e. Croc Master, Raptor, Crystal Ball, etc.). I wish they had replaced those with more Viper variants, or ninjas, etc. I was definitely disappointed they didn't have more female figures. They had tons of great female superheroes, why not in the military or in Cobra?
I like the Ninja Force Scarlett figure. The headsculpt and hair is great, the colors and outfit are good. She THICC though... |

The final decision makers at Hasbro thought females didn't sell well enough to justify production, it had nothing to do the creators and designers. This was common for boys toy lines at the time. Look at the 80's superhero lines:
Secret Wars - no females Super Powers - Wonder Woman only (kind of hard to avoid making due her media exposure) They finally got a new Scarlett approved for 1993 and had been trying to get a new Baroness in but by the time they got approval, line got cancelled. |

Duke. I loved the mail in option. Sent away, waited the six to eight weeks and boom he landed. My Joes had a leader. A leader with a stupid grin on his face. My friends all made fun of him and his big headed grin.

Silver mirage. Good concept with German-styled motorcycle carrier but in reality falls apart if you look at it the wrong way. There must be some way they could have built it to make it at least stay together better.

- Vehicle stickers with the color white in them. They always scratched easily and were very faded to begin with. I don't recall the early vehicles being like this, but I think the '86 and later ones were. Generally, most modern repros do this far better than Hasbro did originally.
- Missiles generally weren't interchangeable due to different mounting methods and size and should have been (Transformers had the same issue). I do like how almost all modern Transformers have standard 5mm peg holes so if you lose the weapon to your favorite toy, someone else can donate a replacement. With missiles on GI Joe vehicles, these were often lost and there weren't replacements available. I'm pretty sure my childhood Skystriker came from a garage sale and was completely stripped of missiles...and none of my other Joe vehicles could donate for it. - Figures of main characters not available while still being featured in the cartoon. I think I started getting into Joes in 1984, meaning it was incredibly hard to find a basic Cobra Trooper on the pegs any more. |

I remember seeing Snow Storm on cardbacks and searching for what seemed like forever for him. I was so happy when I finally found him, then as soon as I opened him up I suddenly realized how stupid he was. Unlike Iceberg and Blizzard who were cool enough to go on other missions Snow Storm only got to go on artic missions and was always the first to die. Also remember scouting out Ninja Force Scarlett and Zartan from cardbacks. I was dissapointed as soon as I pulled them off the pegs but I bought them anyway cause I needed those characters. I quickly grew quite fond of Zartan.

Roadblock. ALL of them from the original run. In comics, cartoons, everywhere Roadblock is depicted as a whole head taller than most of the Joes. He's supposed to be big enough, strong enough to hand held the Ma Deuce! That's his character trait! Yet, all his toys are the same size as everyone else.
Also the lack of ammo belts on belt fed weapons (so mostly Roadblock again). It's hard to put him in action when everyone can plainly see that he's out of ammo. Last edited by cyclopswc; 10-29-2020 at 08:42 AM.. |
