So TRU not withstanding there were a few local family spots that jumped on action figures in the red hot market of the 80s. All of these were in South Brooklyn.
Reds Pool and Patio. Red was an asshole but I got Gung Ho (and probably others) there in 1983. It was a good spot to find figures that run of the mill families didn't know about. The place smelled like pool liners. Time Square Store was a small appliance chain in NYC. There was one on Avenue U. Got Airborne there, also in 83. City of Famous Bargains. A mom and pop appliance and electronic shop in the opposite direction on Avenue U. It was an old creaky floor dump held over from the 1960s. The guy who owned the place was a super nice/cool guy. The looked like the actor who played Casey Jones in the first Turtles movie. He had a couple kids my age and knew what was what. In 1984 he held Storm Shadows behind the counter for the "real fans", or so he said. He was the only reason that my brother and I ever found Storm Shadow at all. I'd like to thank him and hope he did well in life. Genels. A small card and candy/lotto shop in my 'hood. Got my first Joe, Breaker, there in 82 and found a Flint there years after he was out of production. Was a great little local spot for Ben Cooper costumes, holiday window decorations, model kits etc. In the late 70s to early 80s Mr. Genel order my mom a 12" Kenner Luke. You could NOT find him anywhere. He was a grumpy guy but always liked me and was nice to me. I gave him as much of my business as I could until he sold the place. It's a Real Estate agency now. Like TRU, they are all gone now and that makes me really, really sad. The Brooklyn real estate market has ruined the entire borough. |

There was a variety store in St. Louis called Nagle's. You could find anything there: tools, candy, even blow-up dolls. Being a small, family-owned operation (only 4 stores at their peak, I think), their prices were slightly higher than, say Children's Palace, but since my Aunt knew the owners, we'd get the Friends 'n Family discount.

Children’s Palace, Service Merchandise, and Hills. Every time we drive by a building that was a Children’s Palace I tell my kids about it.

Growing up for me it was primarily Roses, Ames, and Kaybee Toys. They were all on the route to my mom depositing her paycheck every Friday. (Remember when people had to physically do that?) For the most part we didn't have a car readily available so it was whatever was in walking distance or a public bus ride away. I got to go to TRU on very rare, special occasions.
But randomly even our local grocery store Super Fresh would have a spindle of Joes sometimes. I remember getting a Countdown there. |

My earliest memories of toys are loving going to a store called Children's Palace at the Huntingon WV mall. I also have fond memories of the pictures in the giant Sears catalogues that used to come out. I remember seeing so many cool Star Wars and GI Joe toys in those that I never had.

For me, I never even knew about Toys R Us until my first trip to the US.
It was always a small toystore called Toys & Wheels that was in almost every mall. However, I later discovered a store called Idea's Gift and Toys which was a local family owned gift shop. However, they had a huge wall of Joe stuff and cause their price was about $1 more than retail, I would always be going there to get previous year's figures. I loved that place but they closed down. Then there was a collectible store that opened up and that was the first time I was exposed to a collectibles store that would have old stuff (at much higher prices) but it was the first time I saw stuff like the G.I.Joe HQ in box and some of the older stuff. This was in 1987 when the Fast Draw wave came out and they still had the 1985 Snake Eyes. That store didn't last a year though but it was a really cool experience. It was right in front of the bus stop of the bus I take so I would pop in there when waiting for the bus.

In KC for me it was a place called Toy City off Metcalf in the late seventies and early 80s, and then Children's Palace. Those were my main places I loved to go.
Otherwise finding Joes at K-Mart, Venture, Woolworth, KB Toys was way overpriced but sometimes had to get something there... |
