Steel Brigade figures have always managed to escape my grasp during the course of my 20 years of collecting, and while I know that there are quite a few variations of the v1, exactly what those differences are isn't something I know much about. I saw one on eBay last night, and before I pulled the trigger, I thought it'd be a good idea to "yojoe" it, to make sure that the parts and accessories were all correct to the version I was considering. Lo and behold, it appears that according to Yojoe, 3dJoes and Steelbrigadetracker that these aren't considered legitimate variants any longer, but kitbashes. I'd love to hear how this conclusion was reached- there's a lot here that doesn't really make sense. For example, there are bagged examples- so why would "one or more unscrupulous dealers kitbashing previously released versions" build a figure out of what would have to be brand new(ish) SB parts? Did the "E" variant command a high enough price to justify the effort? And where did the dark gray version of Recoil's rifle originate? I've never seen it elsewhere (though I could see myself having missed it during the glut of new sculpt accessory reuse.) |

That is interesting as I never really paid that much attention to them. And also looking at the lack of information about the different variations. Is the lack of information more of a Hasbro thing or is it more of a YoJoe! thing?
The variation in the link you provided says, "AT PRESENT TIME YOJOE! IS UNABLE TO VERIFY THE AUTHENTICITY OF THIS FIGURE, DUE TO INFORMATION PROVIDED BY HASBRO" While the others say, "While it's very difficult to pin a specific year to a specific version of Steel Brigade, this version began shipping in 1988 and probably stopped shipping around 1989" But this is very interesting. |

aside from gold there are basically 2 versions of the figure
one made from airborne parts ( has the cross backpack) another made from duke parts. some came with a gray CG rifle or airborne rifle or later ones recoil's

Sure, but there are four confirmed variations on the V1 as well as this fifth, which is now being contested as a kitbash. And you can add Scrap Iron's legs, Flash's arms and both Gung ho and the Cobra trooper waists to the mix. as far as I can tell though, the only variant of the v1 to include recoil's rifle is the dubious "E".

they probably don't have any real sources and I doubt anyone at hasbro cares about toys made 30 years ago.

If you like to see some Joes that are resealed in bags I can point you to a Instagramer who "restores" them by repainting damage and then seals them in bags just like these. He claims to do this for his own personal collection but frankly I don't by that.

That's my point- from where I stand, there's nothing that actually points to the v1E being an unofficial figure, outside of "yojoe and 3dJoes say otherwise". So where's the evidence to back up the claim? I'm not saying they're wrong, I'd just like to know how they came to that conclusion.
NO MORE VERSION "E" POSTED 1/8/19 The topic of the Steel Brigade versions has never really come under any contention, even though there are several of them. If there are any issues they are usually minor such as is the Version D with the alternate rifle an actual version or just a variation? Recently I was contacted by two prominent members of the Joe community to discuss the validity of Version E. I've bought over 50 Steel brigade figures and I will admit that Version E was always a little bit of a mystery to me. This figure was supposedly available during a high run of Steel Brigade orders yet it seems to be one that shows up just as rarely as Version A. After discussing Version E at great lengths and weighing the pros and cons, we have determined that Version E is a fake and not a real version. There was just too much information to support this theory. Bagged versions of E do exist however, there are many factors that point to these being fake. There is also no reason to go back to using the Scrap Iron legs when the build for Version D produced the most figures. These are just a few of many reasons that made us come to the conclusion of eliminating Version E. If you do not agree, you are entitled to that opinion but this site does not support Version E as a legitimate part of the Steel Brigade history. If you want some further insight I recommend reaching out to Bobby directly. I also added his info about 1a vs GH Since I have been saying this for about 20+yrs and it was great to finally hear someone else coming to the same conclusion. VERSION A vs GOLD HEAD POSTED 1/8/19 This won't be as impactful as Hulk Hogan vs The Ultimate Warrior but here is the first Steel Brigade vs Steel Brigade battle. I've purchased over 50 Steel Brigade figures and to this day I only have one Version A but 3 Gold Heads. I search Steel Brigade sales more than one should but I've always found it interesting that the Gold Head is more common than you would think yet it fetches the highest price tag. Yes, ebay's prices are very inflated but this is an instance where the gap is much bigger than it should be. I don't remember what exactly I've paid for my Gold Heads but I can tell you that I have not paid more than $300 for a single figure without the patch or file card. Currently there seems to be an average Gold Head listing of $550. Whats good is that people are not actually paying these prices. Recently, a Version A popped up complete and was only around $400. This is the first Version A I've seen on ebay in a very long time. I don't know when people started to think that Gold Head was the rarest of all the versions but it seems to be out of control now. Just by looking at the tracker you can see that Version A is by far the rarest of all of the versions available. Don't get me wrong, Gold Head is a great version but Version A started it all and it should be at the top of the Steel Brigade mountain.

Of the officially recognized variants of V1 Steel Brigade, which is the most common and which is rarest? Version D seems to be what I see the most of on eBay. I'm guessing Version A is rarest? How often do B and C show up?
I received a Version D Steel Brigade from the original mail-order. Years later, I acquired a V2 gold head, but was never particularly obsessed with obtaining the other V1 variants. However, a friend recently sent me a box of old G.I. Joe stuff they wanted to clear out of the house but didn't want to bother with the hassle of eBaying. A lot of it is junk, but in there are two very nice condition V1B Steel Brigades. One of these is going in my collection, and the other probably to eBay.
