Hi guys. Does anyone know why the Cobra soldier's sniper rifle is in two shades of color? Does it depend on the release date?
Thanks in advance to everyone!

The "true" black is the Python Patrol Officer's rifle, while the original trooper's is dark gray (despite yojoe.com calling it black)... unless of course, every version of trooper I've ever purchased came with the outpost defender version, which is also dark gray (having owned more than 20, that seems unlikely) The same applies to most if not all of the first couple years' "black" accessories. The same rifle was also available in dark and light blue in two of the battle gear accessory packs.

Hi bro! I also think yojoe is wrong. My idea was that the dark gray was from 82, while the black one from 1983 and, as you said, from the Python Patrol Officer.
Perhaps someone who owns these MOC figures could confirm it. My Cobra soldier mint in Italian card (US 1983 release) has the black one.

You could be right on the money there, as I have little experience with carded figures, though I will add that I checked around a bit and only found pics of charcoal gray rifles included in both years.
One thing I was wondering about, though: I don't know much about the international releases of GIJoe, aside from the fact that in Europe they were Action Force first and later evolved into the Joe brand (?). If that's true, what year was the 83 soldier mold released in Italy, and were they produced in the same factories that the US releases were? This may well be uninformed speculation, but I'm wondering if your carded trooper was manufactured and packaged later and or differently than the US release. In any case, hopefully someone a bit more knowledgeable steps forward with a concrete answer for you. |

Don’t forget that they sold accessory packs with weapons in different colors! I haven’t checked them yet, but it may be very likely that it’ll answer your question.

here's how I sort them.
dark gray - 82/83 trooper light gray - outpost defender black - python officer (could also be black major) blue - gi joe accessory pack light blue - cobra accessory pack og & blue also have thinner handles
