Ive been browsing amazon and even ebay.
Why does the old 1998-1989 Sgt Slaughter Marauder figure of Spirit cost more than original Spirit? |

Maybe as he's part of a subteam. Also, the regular spirit was just so common back then, that people just don't have as much nostalgia for him I guess.

Also, the SM Spirit was made with more brittle plastic so it's actually quite difficult finding one with both thumbs intact.
Subteam figures were also released in lower numbers than the original figures, especially the 1984 ones. I believe 1983-1986 figures were the most plentiful in terms of numbers produced.

Yes, the Slaughter’s Marauders figures were notoriously easy to break, so an unbroken one would be very hard to find at this point. My SM Spirit was the only figure where I actually broken off his four fingers (instead of his thumb) trying to put a weapon in his hand.

Could be because of the release of the convention set and folks wanting to have both the ME and vintage SM Spirit.

Brittle plastic is one reason (they were made in Brazil by Estrela for Hasbro). Slaughter's Marauders only shipped in 1989. Not available the next year. Spirit V1 was at retail from 1984-1985, plus some overseas versions. Marauders Spirit, IIRC, was not available outside USA and Canada (?)...which is funny, because they were made in Brazil. But only half the Marauders team got Brazilian releases.

There is one just listed on ebay:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1989-VINTAG...frcectupt=true It is $30 what you would pay any day for a complete 1983 Spirit. I has the two thumbs broken but you could look for those arms later. It is complete and Freedom is not broken which is a miracle. It is not my listing by the way but I do not think you could buy a better price and you even can make an offer. It is a new listing so you should hurry up since probably other collectors have not seen it yet. Good luck. |

I agree with everything said. I will point out though, that I've seen version one Spirit sell for crazy amounts in the past also. I've seen him sell upwards of about $80. Glad I already have both of those figures.

1) Yellowing. Finding a Spirit in his original color is tough, you will have to buy a figure only for a not yellowing arm or for a not yellowing chest before you can assemble a figure that looks with its original colors. I have two and still will have to purchase two or three before assembling my dreamed one. 2) Freedom's claws. Finding a not broken Freedom is another tough hunting task, the piece attached to the main body of the animal is easily breakable and it will be lacking in 95% of the Spirit offers, sellers know the value of an unbroken Freedom so they charge the primium price to the complete figure, not for the figure itself but for the complete accessories. 3) Pouch. It was made of soft plastic and it is easily breakable, kids in the past did not take care of accessories when they played with the figure and the pouch is 40% of the offers broken. I am happy I own all the accessories in great shape and my Freedom is unbroken and its paint is outstanding. I am still trying to assemble a perfect Spirit. I am not a completist so I do not care for subteams, I will live perfectly happy owning the classic Spirit. Last edited by Patricio; 04-10-2019 at 10:38 AM.. Reason: Mispelling correction. |
