Recently a friend of mine gave me some of his older vintage GI Joes since he's moving. My haul included the GI Joe HQ, the Whale, Skystryker, and Dragonfly, all in some degree of disarray and missing parts.
I'm probably in the minority here, but I do have a handheld 3D scanner, and access to a 3D printer--- as the community embraced a file-share of complete vehicles scans? or has it started yet? Scanning takes a while, and if parts are black, the one I have takes forever since I have to surface coat with a reflective spray or use flour to reduce the glare... but I'm curious if has been utilized? the Macross community have done 3D printing for years. maybe I'm a bit slow to catch up to Joes.. but was curious. thanks

Handheld 3D scanner? What is the make/model, if I may ask, and how is the quality of the resulting model? I'm not aware of much (if any) scanning of Joe vehicles being done, but various folks are making 3D printed parts from scratch designs (myself included), with some even making repro parts (usually also from scratch).

I’m not aware of anyone doing scanning; just computer modeling. I do wish that we had a better resource for something like this - it sounds like a great idea!

I own an EinScan Pro from SHINING3D. It's a handheld scanner which I connect to a decently powerful desktop.. The Resolution on it is pretty good, down to ~0.1mm via hand scanning according to the specs on super high res. It can be automated via a turntable (which I opted not to get, since I mainly scan larger format items) but I use an Ikea Lazy Susan to scan smaller things. I would think scanning a complete part, instead of designing it from scratch would be slightly faster? problem is I don't have any complete sets to start from. lol.. I do have the Flagg... so maybe i'll start there? ;0

If I ever have the time to get back into it, I'll definitely start making sturdier repro parts for my vehicles, as well as custom parts. I have a number of True Heroes and other non-Joe stuff in various stages of customizing the old fashioned way. Scratch building cockpit interiors is a slow and somewhat frustrating process at times - it would be so much easier to draw a seat and control panel in 3D and print it out.

Also, I don't know what kind of copyright laws might come up if you tried to sell an exact copy, whether a digital file or printed final product. Could be tricky. I agree with the statement about improving the old designs and beefing them up. the scan I think allows for easier start for that. well i'll just mess around with the boat and see what comes up then-- thanks

I wasn't aware that scanners were available for the home market, that is really cool. I saw a this old house a few years ago where they scanned a broken plaster ceiling medallion(broken almost in half) and they were able to print a new one as a plaster mold). So once you scan the part, you can do any modifications like a from scratch sculpt?

yes. you can save the file as OBJ or STL file format then you can modify in most 3D CAD programs to either smooth or alter the surface (i.e. if something is broken, fill it up.)

Okay so you're telling me that with the scanner you can scan any head you want or other body parts? Or any playset parts? Make them larger or smaller? And make multiples of them? How much is the scanner and printer that you use? How much money do you actually put into this and does it pay off?

I modeled and printed a Mast Cap for the Flagg and some Rattler bombs, but that's as far as I've gone. I do know that there are several GI Joe vehicles on Thingiverse.com that were created with a 1:1 scale. They are great for printing at a small scale for smaller models, but I've never tried a full scale one.
