Not sure if you’d want to go this route, but, if it was me (and I don’t resell, just to display in my own collection), I’d respray it with a tamiya rattle can, there’s a good range of grays available. See TS-48 Gunship Gray. Seal with semi-gloss clear to get that toy ‘sheen’. I’ve refurbed a few Joe and Starcom vehicles this way. Stickers have no issues with attaching to the paint.

Thanks! I did try the black plastic restorer back in December. It reduced it some but did not eliminate. I am thinking of trying some clear satin spray in one of the hidden areas first and see if just the uniform finish hides it more. If that doesn't work, I can always try the full repaint method as you suggested. I did do a decent spray job on a Joe Crusader shuttle that was badly yellowed last fall, and that turned out pretty good.

Love all the ideas and resources guys! I appreciate it. I started on my SkyStriker and it cleaned up very nice! I also did some digging and found the other landing gear wheel! I only have one of those little tabs that snap and hold the landing gear in place though. SO... the hunt begins.
While searching over in my parent's crawlspace, I also found my APC Turret, and the Killer Whale front ramp! Like finding gold... lol. Built a shelf for everything I am restoring too... I may make my own thread to document the progress. Again - thanks for the references everyone. I have subbed this thread. |

Bought a lot of figures Ebay - lots of discolored/yellow figs from 1989. Going to try out the Developer method to see if I can restore them. I just need the damn sun to come out I may end up waiting until spring.

Greetings all,
I recently retrieved all of my vintage Joe figures and vehicles from storage at my parents' house and plan to do some restorations. The first project is to get the figures into shape. I'm going to replace all of the broken/loose o-rings and rusty screws but I have some questions:
Thanks for the assistance! |

Thanks for the assistance! - Thigh screws change size and material over the years as did back hole screws. In the event that some need to be replaced, I have a small supply of donor ones from various figures I parted out over the years. However, if the screw is just rusty and not stripped, soak it in white vinegar for about 8-10 hours and it'll knock the rust right off if it's just surface rust. - T hook breaks are relatively uncommon, I've only had one break in almost 40 years of owning the 3.75" guys. I can't recommend a particular vendor for these since I haven't really needed them. As with the screws, I just used one from a donor figure that was parted out. As far as vintage parts sellers in general, there's a lot of good ones on eBay with my favorite probably being YoJoe Outlet. If it helps, my figure restoration process whenever I get a "new to me" vintage figure is to remove all the screws and disassemble the figure, then wash in dish detergent and water and scrub with a toothbrush. I'm always operating under the assumption that these toys were never cleaned in 30-40 years of ownership and that's just nasty. After drying for 48 hours, then I reassemble them with a new O ring. Thanks for the assistance! Feel free to hit PM me if you need any help. I just clean my screws off by holding the stem (gently as to not damage the threads) with a pair of tweezers and rubbing the head into a Brillo pad, rinse repeat as needed. Then fold an old cloth or paper towel in half, drop a little baby oil in the seem, drop the screw into the seem and rub the screw into the oil with my fingers from outside the cloth/paper towel. Only IF they doesn't help much will I replace them. You'll end up with extra T bars as you go because often you'll buy more of a figure than you need to replace a specific part. You'll have a spare parts pile in no time with extra t bars. There are some great Joe vendors on Ebay, but I just search for what I need as go. My restorations are in the link below.

I've been very happy with the type 2 O rings from SmallJoes.
