Toys r us was about an hours drive for me (still is). I think I got possibly my first joes at some big store in Tennessee while there visiting relatives. Straight arm Short Fuze. Still dig that one even though he ended up not getting much prominence in the comic (or cartoon which my access to was very limited). My access to the comic was excellent though, local gas station carried comics and I had the subscription. I wanted to watch the cartoon, but the file cards and comics were the joe mythos to me. The closest place to buy joes was 10 miles away at a TG&Y but I remember the store being erratic (maybe it didn’t last long in the area and usually didn’t have any joes anyways). I do remember getting two (!) snow serpents there (and a Darth Vader helmet/mask). If I remember correctly, the snow serpents were about the only joes there, so I got them. Now that I think about it, its amazing I got as many joes as I did as a kid, we lived so far from stores that had them. And going to one of those towns wasn’t a real frequent thing. But I’m pretty sure I got the cobra missile playset, remember thinking the cardboard was basically junk and what a rip off it was to put three figures in such a big box and the rest just be flimsy cardboard! The idea of sears exclusive seemed like such a rip off, gotta get an MRI now! Seriously

LOL, when I was a kid we had the local PX and that was it. Going to the off-post TRU was like a major life event.

Well, the insurance approved a CT scan instead of an MRI! Guess I’ll skip it and talk joe instead. It’s all good, I’m in the Lord’s hands, He directs my steps. . I wanted to say it was cool reading about you guys’ experiences.

Flash was my first Joe purchased at Roses in Chesapeake, VA. Later we moved to Annapolis,MD and I fondly remember me and my brother both getting Storm Shadow at Murphy’s Mart. Those were the days.

Back in the 1980's there were no Walmarts or Targets in South Florida. My go to stores for Joes ranked in order of where most of my early Joes came from: 1) TRU (I will miss this one the most). 2) Playworld 3) Zayre 4) K-mart 5) Jefferson Ward 6) KB Toys 7) Best 8) Sears (Thank you for Snake Eyes with Timber) 9) Eckerd Drugs 10) Service Merchandise |

Thanks man I’m from Florida too. Funny you mentioned the colonoscopy, I didn’t realize until I got there that it was the same place I got the coloscopy and that wasn’t a good thing! Woke up from the colonoscopy with an injured lower back.
Man, I sound like an old dude!

I picked up alot of my Vintage figured while shopping with my mom usually for other stuff like clothes and groceries and such. So it would have been places like Zayres, Bradlees, or Benny' s and in later years Kay Bee Toy Works in Fall River Ma. If it was a special occasion like a good report card or birthday etc. Then I would get to go to places like Toys R Us in Swansea Ma (which I later worked at during the Collectors Edition years) or Child Worlds Child Palace in North Dartmouth Ma which oddly my wife worked at right around the same time only we didn't meet until years later. There was even a local drug store that I picked up figures from pretty often called Douglas Drug in Fall River that I would love to find a carded figure or File card with a label on it still. I think thier they were almost twice the regular joe price at nearly $5 each when they were typically around the 2.39 range at most other store. I can even vividly remember buying the Renegades three-pack from a place called Kerr Mill in Fall River that burned down just a few months later and was one of the worst fires in Ma history I lived about a mile or so away and you could smell the smoke and feel heat like it was just down the road.

Service Merchandise was awesome. In southwest PA (Pittsburgh area) my favorite was Children's Palace. Family Toy Warehouse and Hills were good for Joes too. I still remember saving up and buying my Flagg at the Children's Palace in Bridgeville. It is now a Sears scratch & dent. Every time we pass it I tell my kids the story of when I bought the aircraft carrier there.

Growing up in Canada, we had Miracle Mart, Greenberg's, Boni-Mart and Consumers Distributing. However, during the occasional cross-border shopping trip, I remember Hills, Zayre, Kay-Bee and I have a vivid memory of finally finding Storm Shadow at Ames in Maine.
