Ok, so I got into hardcore Joe collecting in the summer of 95, conveniently right after the line had been cancelled. I didn't know it at the time, so I just kept buying the leftover product off the shelves. No wonder the clerks were always happy to see me! But I managed to scavenge a bunch of 90-92 (or 92-94 for us Europeans) guys and build up a half-decent collection. The oldest stuff I could find were Tiger Paw and Pogo, the latter of which I unfortunately bought.
What about the rest of you? Did you guys have a lot of leftover stock hanging on the shelves, or did they clean them up as soon as the new line-ups were released? What were the odds of finding, say, an '86 guy still available in '88? Are there any heroic stories of finding a cool toy that wasn't supposed to be there anymore? And what's the longest period of time a toy was warming the pegs past its natural shelf-life? I'm thinking 82-94 specifically, I'm sure the 00s had a ton of pegwarming stories.

I kept passing up Zander and Crystal Ball at Eckerd drugs up until 1992 but I left them on the peg even then. I did buy a original Ghost HAWK at TRU value in 1990. I bought that haha.

I didn't start collecting until about 4 years ago - but I am happy with what I have collected. However, very little was purchased "off the shelves". The vast majority was from eBay.

Now you mention that I remember a Star Wars X-Wing MIB in some store sold as "clearance" no one cared by Star Wars anymore, boys were buying MOTU, TF and Joes. You cannot imagine how I regret now not asking that toy to my mom.

I stopped getting toys in 1988 and I never really considered older waves that were still in stores as pegwarmers since they were just a constant presence in the aisles. I remember seeing the German Mechanic on pegs at the old Kiddie World on Kirkwood Highway in DE until they closed in the late 80's.
I got back into the figures in the 90's and Drug Stores that were going out of business were great places to find the early 90's waves. |

When I was a kid there was a Lionel Kiddie City in my town. That place was amazing, and they had a whole aisle of dead stock. I remember seeing shelves full of 1983 Jabba the Hut playsets and pretty much the entire line of Matchbox Robotech toys there in like 1993. They also had piles of American Defense or whatever name Remco was pasting on that stuff at the time.

In the days before collectors (and scalpers) and with higher production runs, stuff could linger for years, especially unpopular stuff.
I recall seeing a Tiger Cat at a Toy R Us in 1994. Crystal Ball earned his reputation as a peg warmer. The 1987 action packs, total peg warmers, Lionel Kiddie City had them until that chain's final days. GI JOE Extreme clogged up clearance aisles and close out stores up until 2000. Finding 1986 figures in 1988 wasn't unusual, since the 1986 series reshipped in 1987 with the new series. Up until 1991 that was how it was done in USA and Canada, except for the special teams (Tiger Force, Python Patrol, etc). Non-GI JOE. I recall Crystar Zardeths at a Kiddie City in 1992. Those figures were from 1983. Also a 1985 MOTU Modulok in a beat up box around the same time. Last edited by Sean_C; 12-19-2017 at 07:58 PM.. |

I found an Eco Warriors Toxo-Viper at a Ben Franklin store for $1.00, somewhere around the last year of the original line. I liked my v1 Toxo-Viper better, but I was still so thrilled to find a G.I. Joe that late in the game for so cheap. Looking back, it was probably even crazier that I found a Ben Franklin store than it was to find the Toxo-Viper.

There was an old fashioned dime store in the town where my Grandma lived. It was a small storefront store. General merchandise on the ground floor and toys in a small room in the basement. It was like the land that time forgot. There were toys from the current year and years back. Old Lego sets, action figures and games. I drove to the store one time in the early 90s. They still had DEE-JAY and the Vehicle accessory pack on card. they had some castle Lego sets from the late 80s. Sadly the store closed in the early 2000s but it was certainly one of my favorite places to stop by.
We also had a small regional discount store chain, Prange Way, where I grew up. I remember looking at their toy dept in 1992 or so and seeing 1986 Zaranna's still on the shelf. they also had series one sonic fighters, the Cobra Earthquake, the Cobra Liquidator and the air commandos figures. They were a store that closed in 1995.

Lionel Play World in Hialeah, Florida was the same way. The never got rid of old stock. I remember in the 80s still seeing the Mego Planet of the Apes Figures.
Toys R Us killed the individual toy store market. Amazon has killed Toys R Us.
