I recently purchased the USS Flagg on eBay and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival. This will definitely be the gem of my entire toy collection. It's incomplete, but looks like it's only missing a few items. So my plans are to eventually complete the carrier with all the stock parts and possibly do some customizing to it.
One thing I will definitely do is buy a set of repro stickers for it, which leads to my question. What is the proper number for the Flagg? 66 or 99? Maybe some of the Navy personnel on the forums can chime in, but from what research I've done, the original box art, instructions from Hasbro, and subsequently most (if not all) collectors have at least one set of numbers turned the wrong way. The numbers on the deck indicate 66, but the numbers on the tower indicate 99. Wikipedia states the deck numbers are correctly "upside down," however from what I've researched this info is incorrect. The USS Flagg is based off the Nimitz class carriers. There are only 10 Nimitz class carriers. ALL ten carriers have the deck numbers turned so that they are read by the pilot from take off perspective (looking out at the ocean). To have 99 "upside down" would only make sense if that was the perspective of landing a plane, but planes land from the back of a carrier, not the front. I've done a quick search to see if this has been discussed before and have come back with nothing, so I'm thinking that it's just an assumed fact that the deck numbers on the box art are considered correct. Anyway, if there are any active or retired Navy/Marines on the forum that could clarify I would appreciate it. (Originally posted this in my own thread, and was directed to this thread. Was told this question has been addressed here. I will read through for info. Glad to be apart of the Order of the Flagg!!) Jason |

I went with the Navy regulation way. Mine is custom painted so I put the stickers the way I wanted them. With my project of making deck crew figures and bridge crew figures, I wanted to have the ship as close to the real deal as possible.

Searched through this thread and a few others, and have seen that the "deck numbers" has only briefly been discussed. Just want to put some more info out there that proves that in the real "Navy" world, the deck numbers on an aircraft carrier are viewed from the perspective of looking from the back to the front of the deck. Notice these pics of all ten Nimitz-class aircraft carriers.
1. U.S.S. Nimitz CVN-68 2. U.S.S. Eisenhower CVN-69 3. U.S.S. Carl Vinson CVN-70 4. U.S.S. Roosevelt CVN-71 5. U.S.S. Lincoln CVN-72 6. U.S.S. Washington CVN-73 7. U.S.S. Stennis CVN-74 8. U.S.S. Truman CVN-75 9. U.S.S. Reagan CVN-76 10. U.S.S. Bush CVN-77 Of course most U.S.S. Flagg owners are probably more worried about recreating the vintage setup than Navy realism. But I just wanted to put this information out there. And since I've posted images of all ten Nimitz-class aircraft carriers in one thread, I'm sure NSA is now keeping tabs on this thread! LOL!! Don't sweat it... in the 6th grade as part of an assignment I wrote a letter to the government asking for actual photographs of the SR-71 Blackbird. They wrote me back saying "What's an SR-71? We have no idea what you're talking about." :p
I'm sure I've been on a list of some sort ever since! Ha!

At the Joe Con I drank the Kool-Aid and joined the Flagg Club. Started out as... "Hey I'll just make the center and that will be good enough for me" and then it turned into "well why not... I'm sure this will fit in a Nissan Versa (borrowed from the wife for the gas mileage).
Now I am looking at a small fortune in lumber to build the table that will hold the Flagg and 3 levels of Hangers and such under it. 8 feet long, 4 feet tall, and then the Flagg on top.

I finally got a Flagg last weekend. It wasn't complete but it was close enough for me to pull the trigger. Working on getting it complete right now and it's almost there.

It only was missing the following... Railing Mast Cap Tow Hook Superstructure Pins X2 and also the Microphone and Loudspeaker & Battery Cover which I really don't care about. There are some broken pieces here and there like one of the Deck Clips, the railing on the Bow Ladder, the hinges on both Bulkhead Doors, the tabs on the Combat Computer, one of the Fuel Nozzles, one of the tabs on the yellow Engine Cover, a tab on the Lower Mast, and some of the tabs on a few of the Support brackets. Also I think that the Admiral's Launch boat might have a crack in it as well. As for the rest of her she has her yellowing, but that can be fixed with the usual whitening agents, or paint. She will also eventually need a new set of stickers since many are missing. To tell you the truth I'm not complaining one bit because even if I never pick up any of the missing pieces, or replace the broken ones, I'm happier than a pig in shit just to finally own one. She'll be just fine the way that she is!

Yeah, I know the feeling. Got my Flagg in Friday. Man that box was heavy! The middle deck piece alone is pretty heavy for a toy. Plus the control tower itself is as big if not bigger than the GIJoe HQ.
Has anyone done the whole (x-tra strength) Peroxide, mixed with corn starch & oxyclean paste to whiten their Flagg? Just wonder how that mixture affects the plastic. Also, who was the guy who makes(made) the repro back rail? Thanks. Jason |
