The cobra symbol looks a little too minty so it had me wondering. |

Well, the rivets look right. Also looks discolored, which points to vintage. Or is that the glare?
Cobra trooper's symbols weren't as prove to rubbing as Officers and Viper glider pilots and HISS drivers. Check the foot holes and the back hole (stop snickering) to see if they are standard, and accept vintage stands (as in the early years, not later years) and backpacks. |

Could be all original with a Black Major replacement chest piece, we really need to see a closer shot of the emblem.

Based on the pic and what looks to be some discoloration (that looks really close to my vintage figure) I would say its vintage. He looks played with so I think the insignia just survived.

What does the date stamp on his butt say? I don't know if the repros actually had the right information on it.

I have to agree with the consensus, the discoloration on the chest and right thigh looks vintage. A clean Cobra insignia is not too tough to find on officers or soldiers, especially the 83 swivel arms. Not sure any date stamp would be a valid check as if it were a cast repro it would probably have the original stamp, unless the stamp was less than clear. There was a fellow doing really nice repros of Hisstank Driver chests but the color was just a touch off from the vintage arms, and I don't think the was fellow being deceitful in his sales-but it's been a while don't hold me to that. I don't recall hearing anything about repro soldiers going around but I'm not that much of an aficionado. I don't think soldiers and officers were rare enough to warrant the repros. Your best check would probably be the feel of the plastic. The old 80s plastic used on the figures may be the hardest part to fake. The remaining blue dye on the shoulder rivets is a good indicator that the figure wasn't used much. That coloring is commonly one of first paint aps wear off a well played with figure.

Original, some of my Cobras from the same era have the same discoloration and my original Cobra Solider from 1983 still has a perfect symbol.

They were all over ebay a few years ago. As well as Viper Pilots. Plus various variants Hasbro never made. The source was the guy (Black Major) doing the HISS chest pieces, though there may have been another source, too. Too lazy to look for old threads.
