I have come across figures that have been sitting for the last 20+ years that I know were not around smoke that smell very bad.
My cousins had some that were in my Uncle's attic, and I know for a fact no one in that house ever smoked. They also didn't have a fire place. But when we opened up the zip-locks of around 80-100 figures. It smelled like a used wet ashtray. I think some of the smell comes from the plastic break down as well. As some of the figures were very tacky and sticky to the touch. We had luck with Dawn soap and a dash and car restorer/protectant, that actually worked better than I could have imagined. The worse smell I ever encountered was from a 2015 con set I ordered on Ebay that has the horrendous odor of B.O. I mean very nauseating. I had to take it outside immediately after opening. It reminded of being in cab with a cabbie who hasn't showered in a while. I have completely broke it down and had it wrapped in newspaper for almost 6 months and it still has the odor. |

Now this will let my nerd and medic\nurse side show, but I wonder if (for those of use who can obtain them) using an Ethylene Oxide gas sterilization pouch would work to mitigate these type of odors with the thinking that at their base level odors are formed by a chemical interaction usually with some form of organic component. I know that typically when these pouches are used for sterilization of either disposable instruments or for ones with components that cannot be autoclaved. This makes a very safe method of removing contaminants and microorganisms that would cause most odors, this is usually done after the item is cleaned using normal methods. The gas used should be safe for almost all plastics because it's derivative is Ethylene Glycol which is used for a wide number of plastic applications from carpet to soda bottles and even toys.

Sounds like the acid from the storage bags caused the plastic to break down. That's why it recommended you store them in acid free bags.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a lie. I haven't smoked in 20 years, but my collection came from ebay and i can't vouch for every single person who owned those figures.

I don't smoke in my house. It just lingers and irritates everything from your eyes to your nose. Coats the walls and everything stinks. Second hand smoke bothers me and I smoke...lol

Ethylene Glycol
Makes up most of the mass of anti freeze and has a very distinct smell. It is also extremely poisonous especially for dogs who for some reason want to eat it.

I received a figure off of ebay that was from a smoker. Very strong, unpleasant smell. Had to leave it in cat liter for about a month before it sufficiently weakened the tobacco odor.
But now it smells like cat piss.

Yes smoking causes discoloration and could put a film on the figures. I have seen it and it is nasty I refused to buy the figures. It reminds me of the time I was doing home PC repair. I had a call from a guy that was over 600lbs bed ridden with the exception of someone rolling him to his chair. He was a huge chain smoker and did not clean or hire anyone to clean his house. He was just plain nasty. I showed up he was in an A shirt and undies that were 5 times to small smoking like crazy drinking a pepsi and eating tons of junk food wanting his dial up fixed so he that he could connect up his web tv. The horror still haunts me to this day I had to refuse service and leave it was just way too nasty. There were roaches and who knows what crawling in the electronics.

I seem to remember a couple of new action figures that came out of the package smelling too. |
