Was about to go to bed and thought I would change out the Joes I have on display. Boxed up all my new 50th stuff and felt I would go old school, really old school. Got out all of my 25th and newer original Joes and thier 82 counterparts. Going for a modern "then and now" display. I thought, no don't put weapons on the 82's you know what will happen. It was fine, all went well.
Until I put the uzi in Snake Eye's hand. The thumb is gone, boom gone. I am so pissed at myself now. I had, a perfect mint straight arm Snake Eyes it could not of looked better if it just came off the card. No cracks, no scratches. It was near perfect. I was so proud of it. It had been one of those few figures I considered the pride of my collection and now I need a new right arm for it. Kicking myself right now. |

I feel for you...I had the bright idea of putting a mint Firefly, Zartan and Recondo on my shelf using the classic foot stands...suffice it to say, all three are in dire need of a Podiatrist...prognosis..cracked heels!

Yep, my friend's son dropped my MISB 1983 Zap by accident on my hardwood floor and the chest shattered in the bubble. The plastic on those early Joes is really brittle.

This was one of the reasons I got out of collecting a couple years ago. Real quick backstory...like most of us I grew up on GI Joe. Had just about everything from 1982-85. Got older and got rid of it. Later during my 30s wanted it all back. Spent thousands of dollars over the next ten years rebuilding and restoring my ARAH collection.
I can't tell you how many thumbs and hands have come off...I lost count. How many legs have split completely in half when put on a peg stand for display. Countless rusty screws, dry rot bands, brittle discolored plastic. It's par for the course..these figures turned 33 years old this year. It still sucks and it's very frustrating, Feel your pain.

Bummer man. I was going through my ARAH and noticed several more elbow cracks on figs I don't pose very much. I think these issues are just something we have to live with. I feel bad for the dudes who have a ton of graded AFA MOC Joes. Eventually those bands will give out and you will have an expensive jumble of parts.

I keep thinking I should sell them, let someone else enjoy them before they finally break. But damn the childhood memories makes me hold on to them. damn you 1980's for being the most awesome amazing decade in history to have ever been a kid.

Just keep an eye on parts websites, they're bound to get an arm in at some point.
I was bending the knee of a Blowtorch I just got and the entire leg just crumbled!!! It was cheaper to buy another whole figure and just swap the accessories! I then bought the rifle for Spirit and the tip was broken off inside the bubble envelope when it arrived, pissed me off so bad. I need to get rid of my o-rings for just that reason.

20 years ago or so I wanted to relive my childhood. The pressure and responsibilities of adulthood weren't everything they were cracked up to be and I wanted to surround myself with things from a happier time. Truth is you can never go back. Even with all the broken thumbs, cracked elbows and brittle plastic I had a very hard time letting go. I was saying goodbye to my childhood for a second time. It actually made it easier once they started to break. I knew these weren't items that were gonna last another 20 years. Follow your gut instinct. If you even have the slightest notion of selling them off then it's time.
