I seem to recall that there were times back in the day when one would walk into a Kmart, ALCO, ShopKo, Pamida, etc. and the pegs would be full of the same figures that no one seemed to want. For some reason the CGs really stand out in my mind - does anyone recall others?

I recall seeing Fast Draw everywhere, all the time. I finally bought him when I couldn't find anyone else.

Barricade is the only one I remember being a true pegwarmer. Seems like the pegs stayed pretty fresh around here. The only difficulty was in finding certain older yet high-profile figures like Scarlett, Major Bludd and Cobra Commander around 1984-1985. I don't think I was ever able to find Scarlett.

I wish my 10 year-old brain had realized the concept of army building back then. I did army build when I was a kid but i only army built bats , snow serpents ,and eels . Scarlett was a huge peg warmer and grunt as well i remember going on vacation and going to a kiddie korner and seeing a handful of straight arm scarletts hanging . Dr mindbender was almost as bad later on as was raptor .. |

83-84 is when I started and I only vaguely recall the beautiful shelves full of vehicles and pegs full of figures but don't know if I checked enough to remember the pegwarmers then.
85-86 I really picked up and it was such a bummer to see the same monotonous offerings. The new releases seemed to take forever back then. 83-87 seemed like forever thinking back on it and now I blink and 5 years disappear on me. |

Zarana, Crystal Ball, I remember those two because back then I was always looking for the next year's wave.
Most of the time though if I already had that year's assortment, I did not pay much attention. If I just saw that there were the same figures or vehicles I already had I headed up front to the comic spinner rack. Vehicles were another matter as I had to save up to get those or wait until a birthday or Christmas. So I might look at those for a few minutes. Never really even knew what a pegwarmer was back then. I didn't care, all I knew was the next assortment was not out yet. Zarana was usually there though if the pegs were pretty empty, I do vaguely remember that, same with Crystal Ball. Post 1987 I was usually able to get everyone at one whack and really did not care who was on the pegs. I would still check the aisles for new stuff though

Believe it or not the very first peg warmer in 1982 was...Snake Eyes! Yep, I remember the first wave hitting Toys R Us in April of that year and all the figures sold out except for Snake Eyes, probably because his mythology hadn't been set in comics yet and he was the only figure molded entirely in black without any paint applications.

Crystal Ball's retail unpopularity is not overstated, he really did linger around years past being discontinued.
Dee-Jay seems like another one. The Action Packs were in places like Lionel Kiddie City until that chain went belly up in 1993, IIRC. Talking Battle Commanders were peg warmers and discounted, IIRC. |

I didn't really start buying most of my childhood Joe collection until the early-mid '90's, so the only 2 peg warmers I remember locally were multiple Wild Bills from the 1992 series in a local hobby store, and I also remember seeing 5 or 6 Toxo Zombies in the local Zellers department store up until they moved locations in '97. Kinda kicking myself for not picking those ones up, now.
Yup. I got all 4 of them from the Rich's department in Calais, Maine, in mid '95 from their discount section. And they had tons more there at the time. |
