Iok's The Corps! review got me thinking about weird memories of weird toys.
I've developed a soft-spot for The Corps! (using an exclamation point is de rigueur, lol) as an adult, but not because of the toys themselves, but because of one vivid memory. When I was a kid, The Corps! was kind of a rarity. Every so often, some kid would have a figure or a vehicle they got as a gift from some relative who didn't know better, but we didn't know what the toyline was called. Then a boy moved into the neighborhood who was a The Corps! fanatic (relatively-speaking). I'm sure this was mostly because his parents bought him The Corps! toys instead of G.I. Joe out of necessity or penny-pinching. Anyway, this kid called them "The Corpse" and would insist adamantly they were better than G.I. Joe. For him, it was all "The Corpse," all the time. I wondered WTF he was talking about--that seemed like a really messed up name for a toy, but also very intriguing--and I remember asking him if "The Corpse" was the bad guy or something. At some point I looked up "corpse" in the dictionary to verify it really was what I thought it was. Verification suddenly made those toys seem mysterious, and thus, cool. One day he had a brand new figure and I saw the packaging. I quickly realized "corpse" was spelled incorrectly, so I ran home and looked up "corps." I returned triumphantly to inform him it was pronounced "the core," but instead of being magnanimously grateful, he called me a liar (The nerve of the kid! And here I was doing him a solid!) which then lead to a huge argument that lasted all summer. Eventually he either moved away or I just stopped interacting with him. For the life of me, I can't recall his name, but I'll always remember "The Corpse," and that memory still makes me chuckle. There were other weird toys that seemed mysterious back then too. Like those Dungeons & Dragons toys, or Blackstar with the sparking chest thing. Buck Rodgers and Star Trek:TMP figures were odd novelties as well. The Indiana Jones stuff was highly sought after, but almost never seen. I even remember a Lone Ranger figure a friend had, but wouldn't part with...man, how I wanted that thing! Funny thing is, when I first saw a G.I. Joe toy, I remember it seeming mysterious and "exotic"...which I suppose it was when compared to the Star Wars stuff I was used to. When I was younger, I had a friend from Canada who had a collection of Action Force figures. I knew some of them were ripoffs of GI Joe like Hyena, but the others with the limited articulation like star wars figures I was baffled about. We used to line up all of our figures and take turns 'picking' our troops to create our armies to battle each other with. Usually the Action Force guys were last picked, but not always (I loved the Black Major). I just thought it was so random that the two styles would be mixed in the same line.
Today however, I love the line and collect a bit of it. Mostly the Red Shadows. |

When I first got into collecting as an adult I'd buy big lots of figures. If there was any Corps figures in it they went straight into the garbage. Now I give them to my nephews to play with when they are over. Some of them are kind of cool.
