I want to buy a vintage havoc, I only collect ME but the mk II makes it obvious to me hasbro wont release one any time soon. That said I would like it to look like it fits with my toma/eaglehawk and ME figs. So my question is how to go about it? The ones I see on ebay all look like they could be messed up but there is no way to know till I buy it. Do those of you who collect vintage vehicles chance it, or is there a way to tell? Do you have to repaint them to get them looking new? Also are all the canopies fogged. I thought I remembered it being clear from the one I had as a kid.
Any advice would help. Thanks. |

You just need to look at the pictures. I restore them, so if the price is right I get it and worry about the other stuff later. Even decals, I replace them if they aren't top notch. I never reapaint, I clean them and most of the time they look brand new.
However the Havoc has such a large canopy it needs to be in the best shape you can find it in. Scrutinize the pictures. Finally, as with all things online, you run the risk of not getting what you think you're buying. Ask for better pictures if you're thinking about buying.

Until now I thought the canopy was supposed to be fogged.

The rear part is fogged, but the majority is clear.
I'd pull the trigger if anyone is looking for a Havoc, as soon as the Club's Cross Country is released, I suspect there will be a run on them on eBay.

There are a few ways you can restore a foggy window if you want to put the time into it.
First you can try that plastic restoration polish that will sometimes make the plastic look clear again. Never used the stuff myself but I have seen good results from other people using it. Or you can do what I do and wet-sand the surface with 2000 grit sand paper and then buff it out with a dremel pad and some light buffing compound. This takes some time and a lot of care but looks superb when done right. The window will be so clear and shiny you can nearly see your reflection in the surface. Keep in mind on the Havoc, only the window itself is clear, the frame along the top and sides where it attaches to the vehicle is textured and meant to be foggy. |

I'm not super confident in my restoration abilities. I'm trying for one for a decent canopy off the bat. If I get it in hand and its bad I may just keep buying canopies by themselves till I get something usable. Thanks for the tips.

I use Meguiars plastic polish for automotive headlights on my canopies, makes them look just about new.

Also you may go to a automotive detail shop and ask them to polish it, sometimes people are pretty cool with things like that, I've had good luck if you just try, TAP plastics may be able to polish it to.

I usually disassemble all of my restorations completely to clean all of the pieces well. With this though, there is always the chance of breaking pieces, but the HAVOC isn't quite as fragile as something like a WHALE or ASP. The plastic is a little more pliable and forgiving when it comes to taking it apart.
