I'll go with a few of my personal pros and cons for RAH vs. ME here.
RAH: Pros: -Can hold their gear better -Have some unique characters like the Headhunter Stormtroopers, Headhunters, Sky Patrol, etc. that aren't part of the ME figures. -The figure stands they had actually fit just about all of them -They fit better in vehicles -They are easier to take apart and customize -Great articulation Cons: -Cracks and breaks in elbows, thumbs, and crotches were a problem for some figures -Some figures looked too thin compared to their larger than life characters(Example, v1 Roadblock) and didn't have "determined" expressions(Flint v1 and Duke v1), so it was harder for me to take them seriously -A lot of the JvC figures and later eras before 25th Anniversary that were done in the "new sculpt" style had bad proportions -Some accessories are expensive to obtain(Night Force accessories, Heavy Metal's mic, etc.) -In the 90's there were a lot of neon colored figures -Most female characters did not have faces that did them justice ME: Pros: -More articulation than the RAH figures -Some figures like the Hall of Heroes Vipers, POC Low-Light, and POC COBRA Troopers were improvements over their RAH counterparts -Heads can easily be popped off to create LBCs without the use of a screwdriver -Swivel wrists and for some figures, swivel ankles -Some figures had removable gear(like Shockblast) -Some army builders like the 25th Anniversary Eels and 25th Anniversary COBRA Troopers are cheaper to obtain than their counterparts Cons: -Cheaper plastic -Some figures are more expensive than their RAH counterparts(like Low-Light, unless you get the SM version and Law & Order) -Some figures have trouble standing on the ME stands -Harder to fit some of them in certain vehicles -Still missing ideal figures for characters like Gung-Ho

Vintage is my true love for sure, however I really like modern as well.
The stuff falling out of their hands drives me insane but that's about my only modern complaint. Wait, I forgot them always falling over on their stands lol. I'm always afraid to display my vintage figures for fear of breaking thumbs and crotches. Modern is a relief, I can just relax and enjoy them.

The modern figures are really cool, and I have a ton of them. However, I'm emotionally attached to the old stuff. The old figures are also much better "toys" than the new figures. The new figures are made for weirdo adults like us. The old figures were actually made for kids to play with.

I think it should be noted that both lines are far superior to their contemporaries in terms of detail, articulation and sculpt.
This was more obvious back in the day, but modern Joes are better than any 3 3/4" figure out there right now, even lines that are also done by Hasbro! So neither line is crap. Like others have said, it comes down to personal preference. I collect both but I find collecting the vintage stuff much more rewarding in the long run. So much so that I've drastically slimmed down my modern collection (hint, hint, check my BST).

I personally grew up with the ARAH Joes so there will always be that emotional tie to them. I have most of them from 82-94, some from my childhood collection, others obtained later. Over time, O-Rings have had to be replaced, t-hooks replaced, and arms replaced due to broken thumbs. These guys stay in the cases with the excepotion of some vehicle drivers, and this is mainly to protect them from further damage.
I was leary of the ME figures at first, just as I had been when Blu-Ray came out. Why would I replace a figure (or DVD) with one that I already had, just because it was newer and more detailed. I soon realized that I was not replacing my vintage figures, I was getting a slight upgrade to them as well as being able to handle them without fear of breaking. In the end, it is all a matter of preference, and if you asked a hundred tankers on here the original question from the OP, it would probably be an even divide. ARAH put this figure line on the map and ME continues its legacy. Why not enjoy both if you can?

I think this is the best statement that can be made. Personally When I pick up my old joes they feel like well crap. rusty screws, rotten O-rings, paint that wore off too easily (IMO) cracked, broken or missing crotches etc. Time may tell a similar story on new joes but I like the new ones best.

It is truly personal preference. I collect both, but nastalgia has me collecting more vintage. ME troop builders are becoming more and more expensive to collect with limited retail availability(POC, Crimson Guard and Night Viper). So now troop building vintage has become cheaper.
If you decide to collect modern and want value or want to see quality of ME figures, Go to Dollar General or online and buy some of the basic series Joes that are only $6 each. The figure quality is good and you get inexpensive troop builders. It will help getting your collection going. If you decide to collect vintage, buy a Lot of figures on Ebay and get a good start of a collection and go from there. Again, it is personal preference. Whatever you decide to do, enjoy!

On newsculpt: I would argue the line ended somewhere in the 60/40 ratio. Yeah there were some real stinkers (especially in late 2003 and early 2004), but many key 2002 and most of the run after mid-2004 produced some REALLY solid figures, with the late 04 and 05 stuff clearly showing the "transition" from ARAH styled construction to the detail of 25th. I've said before: I still think ARAH is the better TOY, and remain more playable than most of what Hasbro has produced for 25th to current. But PoC and current are far better COLLECTIBLES, with superb detailing and accessories. Personally, I'd rather get a decent toy than a low end collectible.

Know this is a few days old, but thought I'd bump it once more to add the following 2 thoughts:
1. I know a lot of people look down on mixing the lines, HOWEVER when you have a big enough group of figures, mixing them gives them a more "real" look in the sense of different body types, if you're willing to look at it that way. I always find the VvV figures to be the problem children when mixing because many are a bit smaller and unusually thin when displayed with other lines. (That said, it does work kinda well for certain female characters.) I think it's worth giving an eyeball test to mixing figures to decide for yourself. 2. There are also collectors (such as myself) that strive for comic or cartoon accuracy when displaying toys. And mixing lines is almost a necessity here. For example, unless you get the Collector's Club version (which is pricey) you pretty well need ARAH version of Dial-Tone to nail the cartoon look. I find there is no better version of Baroness than the ARAH version in her black armor. (One with a really good paint app might still be the "prettiest" female Joe figure.) And those figures work pretty well with more modern versions of Mainframe and Destro, respectively. So it all works out in the wash. Threads like this are awesome for discussion but it's SUPER important to figure out what YOU like. If you don't figure it out for yourself, you're likely to sink a bunch of money into a collection you might not love in a year or two. Best way to eliminate buyer's remorse is to form your own opinion and stick to it. You don't lose money on toys you don't sell. Good luck. |
