Hey tankers,
Like many of you, part of my GIJoe collection consists of vintage O-ring figures. I am thinking of displaying these figures, but I am concerned that posing them (with weapons and accessories) may put stress on the elbow rivets, and/or possibly damage the more brittle plastic of the hands and crotch piece. I recall reading a thread where one tanker mentioned a chemistry professor of his stating that the plastic the vintage figures are made from is unstable, and therefore will discolour, and /or become brittle over time. Do any of you put your o-ring Joes and Cobra on display, or due to the possible fragile nature of the plastic, should I keep the o-ringers packed away (only to be occasionally brought out)? Please advise...... Thanks! SW

its ur own individual philosophy
if u like them displayed then put them in a place u can view them if u want them 2 b an investment... then do what u want 2 "protect" them they r only worth what we think they r worth...some ppl think they r worth gold, they r only plastic that brings us 80s90skids back 2 a time we enjoyed...so to enjoy viewing them and moving them is the gold. u wont take them 2 the grave w u... btw put a lot of joes on ebay...u probly wont get what u think u should for them. community values r different from what we believe sometimes, remember they r only toys, enjoy them in your 2nd childhood where u have money to buy what u want

When I first started collecting vintage Joes, I was almost afraid to touch them because of all the horror stories about their fragility, but I eventually got brave and started gearing them up and posing them and have never had one break on me as a result. They're surprisingly robust for being 30 years old.

I only display the ones that came with vehicles really. Since the ME joes are bigger and can look silly next to most of the ARAH vehicles, it's just easier to do. I don't have them hold weapons for fear of breaking the thumbs off.
I've seen ARAH troop builders w/ hundreds of figures all lined up in rows, so don't be afraid to display them if that's what you really want. I like the look of the ME, so I display and own more of them. |

Watch out for florescent lighting. It will turn some blues to green.

My collection is boxed up. The ones I choose to display are doubles of ones I have in the cases and are in poorer condition. That way I won't be concerned if they yellow. Or if the cleaning crew steals them, I'll only have to maim them when I catch them.
They are just a handful of figures... Python Patrol members, Copperhead, 84 Stormy, etc. So, I'm not suggesting you get doubles of everyone in your collection

My swivel arm 1983 CC had this happen, but it was packed away (not under a florescent light). My Cobra Troopers also appear to have a slight discolouration as well. None of my other Joes (including my Argentinean SS) are discoloured though.
Sort of strange, considering all the figures were packed away. Maybe it was the nature of the 1983 plastic, or maybe it was the baggies used (CC & both CT's were originally stored in plastic baggies with a white band on them, but are now in new transparent baggies).

I have never worried about displaying my loose figures. My carded or graded stuff I've kept tucked away out of the light to prevent card fading, but that stuff is much more valuable. https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbi...user=532396042
