My wife and I are having our first baby soon and i'm super happy about that it's so exciting. However I'm curious how other collectors deal with having kids and collecting GI JOE and toys in general. Do you let them play with it? Do you buy newer stuff for them? Do you tell them it's off limits? I only collect vintage GI JOE so there's no way i'm letting my kids play with that stuff. Well not the mint stuff anyway. Are kids today even interested in that stuff at all? I realize it will be a few years down the road but i'm curious how other collectors handle it.

It all depends on you. I waited until my child turned 5 years or so. I've always instilled toys care to him, so I have no problems that he will harm them... But accidents could happen.
You must be clear if you are interested in maintaining your impeccable collection or if you would like your child to play with them. It's your choice, however I must say it is very fun to play, collect and even make customs when we have children. At least that is my personal experience. |

We can be an inspiration for the kids in many ways. So we can share with them the interest for our hobby and the habit of collecting while sharing special moments "playing together". The important thing is to enjoy them. Blessings with the arrival of your baby!

Funny Story....
When I was 23 my Joes were tucked away in the crawl space under my mom's stair case at her condo. Every other conversation she nagged me about the Joes being in the way.... so eventually.. guess what I did? I gave them all away to a local charity and some to my nephew.....All of them.. all vintage.. Night Viper great condition.. 82 figures...MOC Big Bear, Snake Eyes.. Blue and black.. etc... Come 5 years later my son is born... when he was around 4 years old.. I happen to run accross the DTC line online... so in nastalgia.. I buy the DTC Grand Slam.. cause he looked awesome,.. and he was the closest thing to Flash, who was my all time favorite figure... I bought two.. one for David.. one for me.... eventually that turned into 12... then I bought him a "lot" of Joes online... he loved them.. they were all used.. but for $32.00 I got a bunch of O-ring figures.. and man... it was so fun for him.. and just watching him play was fun for me.,... Well then 25th came out.. and whoa.. I was sucked back in.. I now have about 200 figures.. N0-ring style.. no o-ring save for some customs and rando's.... Point of long story... invest in some second hand Joes on line.. see how he plays with them..Eventually, he may grow to like them! My son is now 10, I bought him some really nice figs.. he loves steel brigade and iron grenadiers.. they look like "juggernauts" as he calls them from MW3. Somehow Joes turned into a big part of our lives.. and he actually is starting to customize like his Dad.. so cool.. Anyway.... I'd say have fun with the process... you can't go wrong either way.. Wager towards yes.. AC |

It is all in parenting. Teach your children to value what they play with. When I was a kid, I would break things when I was upset with my parents. This was usually due to my parents ignoring me or getting angry with me for trying to communicate with them during tv time for them.
Anyway, your children should be more valued than anything else. That is the moral of my story. |

I will hold you to that. Seriously, if you do value your children above all elze and spend time and teach them right, everything else will fall into place.

First off congrats brother, becoming a father is one of the best feelings in the world. Your child will soften your heart and bring a warmth to your heart and soul unlike you've ever felt before.
I know this for a fact as I am the proud father to a (5) year old Faire Princess, she just started all day kindergarten and I am amazed by her accomplishment thus far. The generation of children growing up with all this tech. like my daughter are so much more advanced than my generation was, its really cool to watch them absorb it all and run with it. Anyways to answer the question, I collect vintage, 25th, ME, ROC, Retaliation, 30th as MoSc, Loose, variant and I army build as well so my collection has gotten rather large. But my daughter enjoys playing with the vintage stuff the most, which makes sense to me. The new stuff takes some manipulation to make them hold the gear and all the small parts come on and off, while the vintage stuff you just play and play, rather than posing over and over. So I say play on and make some memories, if anything gets broke, shrug it off because its only a toy and the memories are priceless brother. Again congrats |

I have no kids, but if I did, I'd let them play with the action figures I've collected. Passing on things I've loved is more important than their condition. If I had kids, I'd introduce them to G.I. Joe.
