Back in the 80's GI Joe was a force to be reckoned with. GI Joe was captivating the imaginations of boys and girls alike. Each year in the 80's more figures and more vehicles and more play sets and more accessories. Not to mention sleeping bags, bed sheets, lunch boxes, trading cards, and so on and so forth. Once the 90's hit, GI Joe began to fade away until it was a distant memory. So what's responsible for GI Joe's demise in the early to mid 90's?
Was it the neon colors? Were we the only generation of kids that loved Joe so much and when we got older the new kids coming in behind us showed little to no interest? Was it the spring loaded weapons? Was it video games? Was it political correctness? Was it bad marketing? Did Hasbro just run out of ideas? I don't know. What says you? Now remember, I'm talking about what happened in the 90's. Not what's happening now. GI Joe did disappear from the scene in 1994, nowhere to be seen in 1995 and 1996, but then reappeared in 1997. I'm asking what caused the death in 1994. Or what caused the disappearance? Or what caused the hiatus? Whatever you want to call it? . Last edited by sbartek1974; 09-15-2013 at 09:17 PM.. |

I'd say it was a combination of the things you mentioned that killed off ARAH. Even now a large portion of action figures from many lines are purchased by adult collectors, kids are more into electronics and have been for a while.

For me:
1. cartoon - switched from Sunbow to DIC 2. moved away from military base concept into fantasy and neon concepts. 3. Video games - Damn Nintendo 4. Girls.... YESSSSSS Girls. wait this should be my #1 reason. |

Things just ran their course and the line needed to take a break. It happens.
Overall, however, no toy line has been as prolific or has had as much merchandise as GI Joe. It's really astounding.

I liked the "realistic" aspect of joes. The first ones were all in olive drab uniforms - they had a connection to the real world. Sure there was snake eyes and then scarlet, but most had uniforms. As the toys evolved all the uniforms became "outfits". Each was unique, but most were ok. Sci-Fi pushed it a little. Zandar was like ? but he was a punkass b so whatever. Others were great: Hawk, Footloose, e.g.
I was fine with this until unique became stupid. Yes neon colors were flippin stupid. Nice camo - maybe if you are hiding in the clothing rack at a surf shop. I remember seeing these on the pegs and even though I still liked my 3.75's I simply could not buy such utter shit. |
