With ME Joes going into a hiatus toward the end of this year, and the only real price guide out there published by Mark Bellomo as part of a larger TOY price guide...isn't it time for a Gi Joe price guide that covers 82-2013? The Beckett price guide comes out monthly for baseball cards and includes prices on cards dating back to the 1940's. It's structure is to price only the cards that are considered uncommon (or more valuable) which affords them to publish prices on cards up to date. Why don't we have something like that for Joes? Even if this was only an annual publication, it would give collectors more of a basis for purchasing figures other than ebay final sale prices.
Here is my thoughts on how the price guide could be published: 1) For each year identify the figures that are considered common and give them a base line price range ex: Cutter, Dusty ($7-9) and list the figures valued above the common price under the appropriate year. (same process for vehicles) 2) Have a scale like the old online guide that allows for three grades of excellent, mint and new in package with prices for each grade. 3) have up arrows in green showing that the figure/vehicle has increased in value or is increasing in value, rare, etc with red arrows going down for the opposite. 4) have short write up articles about new sets, specific vintage sets/figures/vehicles with specs, what makes them special, their rarity and include actual collector pics, write ups and hobby experts opinions. 5) advertise regional toy shows, shops, and "classifieds" for those collectors looking for Joes. I'm not saying that this has to be a paper publication, and I am sure that there are many of you Tankers out there with the skills to create a site that could do everything I just mentioned. The hard part is finding a starting point for prices, deciding who the "joe experts" are to set these prices, and getting enough interest from collectors to make this all worth while. The "tank" is a great site for information about everything Gi Joe, however I feel this is the one thing the site lacks. I for one, would pay $4.99/month for a monthly price guide with updated prices, articles about the Joes we love, and news about our hobby. Maybe my thoughts are on too grand of scale, or maybe I'm the only one who wants something like this....what do all of you think? |

I've never understood a price guide. It's never been accurate. They fluctuate too much.
I bought a lot of Joes and vehicles off a dude, the only complete vehicle he had was the Desert Fox. He told me he bought it from eBay a few years back for $80 bucks!!! WHA?? I was getting outbid all the time on a complete Cobra Maggot because I set my limit to $30 bucks. Got one yesterday for $10, just lucky, but I remember seeing complete Maggots go for over $50 a few years back.

I don't need a price guide, but I'd gladly buy a Bellomo modern era Joe guide book.

Sounds like a lot of work...the Ebay app and searching recently ended auctions is so much easier.
and if items are rare enough that they don't show up on ebay that often...you should either know the market value for what you're buying...or you probably shouldn't be buying it. |

I'd rather see what the original price was, just for nostalgia sake. Bellomo's book is nice, but it has too much white space and instead of listing the common missing items (sometimes it's every piece) he should put a close-up of a cool feature, or detail on a vehicle that most pictures don't ever get. Or at least a second view of the vehicle.
Meh... I'm overly opinionated on stuff like that I guess, lol.

Are we sure that ME figures are going on hiatus? they haven't really announced anything either way yet. Although I'd say it is safe to assume nothing would happen till next spring or fall at earliest, but we still could get 7 pack exclusives or something. I remember the last BBTS dreadknock marauder packs somewhat came outta the blue. Personally though, I'm nearly broke and still have a lot of things I want to catch up on so I'm sorta okay with this.
Like others have said I think a price guide is pointless. Ebay is really your best gauge for a price guide. Maybe lower it a tad because you have to factor in the shipping and ebay selling fees which raise the final prices. The one positive thing I did like about the JoeCon (if you may recall I was not impressed with it), many of the vendors sold stuff that wasn't super rare a good 5-7 dollars cheaper than what you could find on ebay. |

One thing I'd like to see is price reflect the actual condition of the figure. Granted it can be hard to tell from a picture sometimes, but I've seen figures with heavy paint wear and most likely loose joints go for the same as figures in excellent condition. It's almost like people don't take the condition into consideration when they price an item.
How much would you pay for a 1985 Crimson Guard with mostly worn off Cobra symbol and worn black paint vs one that looks almost new? |
