I found a bunch of figures in good condition but noticed rusted screws on the legs with a few of them. Is there a good way to remove the rust without damaging the paint?

I always remove the screw and clean the head with fine steel wool.

If you are talking about the legs:
Remove the screw and use a cutip with soap and water. That should work. If you are talking about the head of the screw: I have used Mr. Cleans magic eraser and I would say fine steel wool would work to.

I don't know about a cutip, but I've found that Q-tips work great for this.

What I do is put the rusty screws in a cup and spray some WD-40 on them and let them sit for a while. The rust will turn black. Then I sand the screws as best as possible.
Then, as there will be some rust residue in the screw hole, I use a toothbrush and dish detergent and gently scrub the part. Rarely, the plastic will have a rust stain on it that won't come out with scrubbing. I've seen this a few times on white or very light characters. One way you might be able to clean this up is to put some acetone (nail polish remover) on a q-tip and gently rub the stained area. WARNING: this is damaging as the acetone is actually eating away at the plastic, so only do it as a last resort. And paint will come right off with acetone, so be very careful not to touch any of the figure's painted areas. If there is rust residue on a painted area, please do not use acetone on it [/warning]. |

If you remove the screws and soak them in coca-cola it will remove the rust.

I soak them for about 30 minutes. If it doesn't all come off I replace the coke and soak them for another 30 minutes and then I scrub them with a regular napkin. It usually works for me.
