The Stryker is a bit of a joke. They cost millions to build and field, only to need upgrades and changes to each environment after wards. Wheeled vehicles aren't the way of the future. Tires are meant for roads, not for all terrains that are neccessary for the military to traverse. We need tracked vehicles with upped armor. There is a campaign to get M113s out of storage and upgrade them for pennies on the dollar compared to the Stryker program.
Our main issue right now is a light vehicle that can be air dropped. That is where countries like Russia completely outshine us. Russia moves FAST when they attack because of their huge list of air drop capable vehicles. The conflict in Georgia surprised everyone with how fast and swiftly Russia destroyed an equally equipped and trained force. Quote:
Iraq had the third largest military in the world back then. Most forget that. The United States was really nervous going to war with them. Although they fought on occasion, the Iraqi's largely ran away when confronted. Our military was extremely worried about the T-72s. They could destroy an Abrams tank in a single shot with that massive rifle. Russian tanks have always been brutes though. Now with armor advancements they aren't so much a threat, but they aren't the Russian backbone tank anymore. They still have tons of them, but Russia's workhorses' are the t-80s and t-90s.
The stryker was supposed to be air drop capable, but that idea was lost after production overruns. bastards. Quote:

All that to say, the real life Mauler was an interesting idea and could certainly fill a niche with rapid deployment forces or with forces engaged in combat in some Third World battlespace, and as such makes an excellent vehicle for a Joe strike force. |

Editted to add a photo of the M60AX (experimental version)tank. Obviously the Mobat is supposed to be the M60 but I thought this was maybe the version they used for the Mobat. These scans are from the book Modern American Armour published in 1982. Last edited by cobralegion; 10-07-2013 at 02:47 AM.. |

I'm sure it's been mentioned in this thread, but the Hasbro designers were allowed to see upcoming prototypes and other new vehicles to influence their toys.
Some pretty cool info!

After reading more about the SR-71 and its pilots, its very clear where they got the idea for Ace's uniform.

This is a really old thread but I thought I'd post a link here. I just made a video about the Mauler's history looking at some of the visual reference that might have influenced its final look. I wasn't planning on making an entire video but once I started researching tanks and the history I just got sucked in. I've always been a fan of documentaries in general and as a kid half my bookshelf was illustrated history of tanks, or jets or warships etc. So hoping a few of you find this interesting. Thanks.
