My son turns 6 in July. I told him that once he reaches 6, I'd give him my Joes. He received what I call "Faux Joes" from my dad for Christmas. He had his tonsils out on Tues and yesterday, in a rather pitiful voice, asked if he was old enough to play with my Joes. So, I climbed into the attic and pulled down the 32 gal trashcan and 3 other tubs of Joes. I then wracked my brain trying to figure out which bombs and missiles went with which vehicle. Overall, everything is in decent shape, considering it belonged to an Air Force brat and crossed the Atlantic twice, among other moves. I found some broken pieces and wanted to find out about repairing them. The big one is the vanes on the Killer WHALE. I think those were probably broken when it came out of the box, if not much after that. My RAM motorcycle has lost the front front wheel/forks. I can't remember if that turned or was fixed in position. It looks like I tried to glue it with model glue at one time, but it didn't take. My snowmobile has a busted tab that would hold the front skis on. Haven't been able to find a replacement for that. Are there any instructions/hints for repairing the various tabs and pins that seem to break?

Since those are smaller vehicles maybe easier just to buy a new one. The vanes of the whale are kind of expensive though to get replaced I think.

For play purposes, super glue is a sure bet every time. If you really wanted to get crazy, reinforcing them with metal pins, paperclips, etc would help prevent more breakage later on. Welcome to the 'tank, and congrats to your son- he's in for a fun road ahead!

For figuring out what goes with what hit up Yojoe.com or 3Djoes. Ebay has just about any replacement piece you can need. And if you’re not concerned about pedigree there are many fans making reproduction pieces in 3D printers or castings for the more expensive parts. The veins can be pricey. Also you can get excellent replacement decals from Toyhax.com. Feel free to hit up my Flickr album linked below for the vintage Joe albums to see how the decals applied. Be warned, I broke the hand of my Steeler (an expensive part to replace) when I tried to put the Uzi in his hands after 33 years. The plastic is a lot more brittle than it was in 1982. Expected further breakage and know it’s not the kid’s fault. Also Hasbro has been running the old cartoons on their YouTube Channel. The kid might enjoy those. It may help add some context to the characters. Welcome and best of luck with you son enjoying your collection. You picked a good time. Hasbro seems to be really ramping up Joe again.

Are you happy with the repro veins? My veins have the back section intact but the stupid little tabs on the bottom wore off and I can’t attach the cross bar. They photograph well enough as is but I want my Whale to be 100%.

Thanks for the heads-up on the decals. The 44 y/o me is a lot more OCD on decal placement than the 7 y/o me was. I'm also finding random decals in odd places. I downloaded the first two seasons, but couldn't find 3 and 4 as a nice bundle. I guess I'll try to do the old download YouTube thing. He's been watching them off and on. I'm hoping they start producing like they did in the 80s. They could probably produce the same vehicles and still make a killing. There doesn't seem to be a comparable toy out there these days.

This morning, I discovered that my loading ramp on my Killer WHALE has been mounted in the wrong place since '84. Looks like the two mounting holes on the front end were broken when I got it. Memory is fuzzy, but I think the box was damaged - last one on the shelf and I really wanted it. I could never figure out why it would not close nicely. Repairable?

If it’s the ramp that you need it is cheap to replace, just get a replacement on EBay. I saw some lower sections at decent prices too if it’s the female end on the top side of the lower section.

The lower sections I've found all had broken front ends as well. I'm not super concerned about it. Worked for me for the 6 years I played with them. The kid will survive. I saw a video on repairing thumbs. Maybe the same substance will work to create new mounts.
