I’ve been thinking, do you think it’s feasible (or worth it) to dust off the O-ring Joes and bring new product into the discount market?
I think Hasbro could bring back ARAH and have it be successful. With a decade’s worth of superior product, Hasbro could dig deep into its history and construct a product that feels fresh while utilizing minimal R & D. I believe their (albeit half-hearted) attempt with the latest Dollar General line is a step in the right direction. They could continue the push into the discount market. Hasbro is perfectly poised to dominate this market with a directed response that takes into account the continuingly sluggish economy. Am I barking up the wrong tree? What do you guys think?

I don't think O-ring has much to do with economic factors. I think they'd just continue to do modern era figures with limited articulation.

I can only answer for myself.
Unless it was a "greatest hits" line-up. With original looking (color/accessories) remakes. I would not buy any. Remember, the previous joes are still in Alot of stores, even now. Only the ME figures are selling well. |

I think the Dollar General Joes are a step in the right direction for discount stores, and 30th-style figures for regular stores. A lot of wave 4 30th was produced, and it sold out quickly.

With ME becoming the new current default design for the line, Hasbro did not feel it feasible to store the toolings when the only outlet for them was the Club (and most of the later o-ring offerings from the club saw fairly pitiful sales) And I don't feel the o-ring figures really offered any real savings considering most of the o-ring figures are in storage and there is ZERO demand for a lot of the old figures. To create any interest, it would require fairly aggressive development which negates ANY savings in labor. The Discount Joes we got this year are more successful than any o-ring offering (short of dusting off any leftover newsculpt stuff Hasbro might still have).

The "blue shirt" army builder 6 packs sure sold like hot cakes back in 04. Was it 04 ? I don't remember exactly other than I bought two sets and then the next day they were sold out and far as I know never restocked. I'd love to see those canceled "then and now" sets get made. Although to be honest the main reason I want that is so that I can finally have a ARAH Duke with a waist that doesn't break if you look at it wrong.
Or did you mean like the Valor vs Venom and Spy troops and DTC o-ring figures ? Some of the DTC stuff was pretty good and I thought they was on the right track with swivel wrists. Combine that with ARAH styled o-ring figures and that would be the perfect throw back line. |
