Given those pages, I wonder if the 3DJoes scans are actually from a regular Sears 1984 catalog. (The Wish Book was the Christmas specific catalog, right?)

Also, turns out, 3D Joes doesn’t even have a scan from Sears on that page for 1984! The scan actually comes from a Montgomery Ward Christmas Book! And if the Bridge Layer was an exclusive, it wouldn’t be in a competitor’s catalog. https://christmas.musetechnical.com/...Christmas-Book

Yeah, but remember that the department stores generally didn’t push toys as a year round purchase. They were still pretty solidly a “Christmas” thing.

So, are we all feeling that Tollbooth and the Bridge Layer ought to be classified as 1984 product?

I think so. I wasn't around yet in 85, but that seems to be the first time they're shown on cardbacks and in catalogs. It's also where Bellomo has them, and he's usually pretty reliable.

With how big a deal Zartan was, the Noks might have been intended as a special multipack or simply normal retail releases (which would make the Joe/Cobra new figure ratio even), but got pushed back due to marketing reasons or carryover needs (84 had a LOT of carryover from the prior couple years).

It seems they were transitional figures: figures designed and completed before Hasbro transitioned to the new neck design. Tollbooth clearly has a "combat engineer" vibe and might have been designed as a stand alone figure before being shunted into being a vehicle driver. Or Sears paid for an exclusive item for 1984, and the Bridge Layer was intended as a 1984 release.
