Hi everyone,
I was kind of curious what the point of the DTC figures were about and how it developed. I came back to collecting Joe's at the end of VvV and purchased the DTC stuff...but was this line supposed to last longer? Also, how were the figures selected? Was DTC just an extension of VvV that were left to be created but were made exclusively for the stores. I was bit confused with this line because I was expecting periodic waves being released. But was it intended just to be a year long? Was this a test to see how many of us GI Joe fans would support buying figures from HTS? We did get some cool figures from this line and of course, possibly the coolest, more modern and technically fun vehicles created for the GI Joe line with the ROCC and RHINO. But really never fully understood the purpose of the line and how it came about. Thanks in advance.

Not sure where it came from, but there is a new "wave" of DTC figures from the GI Joe club.

Curious why they were not produced...was DTC abandoned for total focus on the Sigma 6 line?

Yeah, I just went there a few minutes ago and thought...."Cool!" the unproduced wave 4 until I saw the price...Yikes! not just that but some of the 25th Anniversary vehicles as well. It's quite expensive.
Curious why they were not produced...was DTC abandoned for total focus on the Sigma 6 line? I want the Airtight figure, but I am not gonna jump through some hoops, fees and club membership requirements to get him. I figure if Hasbro cannot release him the correct way, then I won't bother. I have never, ever liked the Valor Vs. Venom action figure arms. They are clearly designed for little 4 year old kids, and lack any realistic detail. |

Hasbro had a line in the hopper called "Robot Rebellion" in which the BATS were going to play a heavy part in it. The DTC line is what was ready to go for this line at the time it was erroneously cancelled for S6. In addition there has been a lot of speculation that the Dragonhawk was retooled for the 2.5" line and was supposed to be in Robot Rebellion as well as a large number of the 2.5" vehicles that were made from scaled down designs from RR. (The 2.5" HISS bears a striking resemblance to the DTC HISS) The Club Membership Cobra Commander is from RR.

DTC is the result of people with no proportion perception being allowed to sculpt toys that once looked fine.

DTC was a failure for both Hasbro and the Club. The Club still has unsold wave 4 product and no online store to sell it for months. I would imagine the Joecon Club store is going to have a blowout sale.

DTC was a combination of line mismanagement and simple overestimation of the online collector community's ability and desire to purchase products online.
I believe Hasbro had product made and had to find a way to release it. They also had an idea of DTC as a way to test the viability of Hasbrotoyshop. I suspect the long term plan for HTS was to be a way for Hasbro to fill collector themed toy needs. But, they simply ordered too much Joe product and the line was a complete and abject failure. Hasbro had to get Toys R Us to buy up the overstock for a pittance and sell it in their physical stores in order to get rid of it. Even at ludicrous clearance prices, many of the items simply would not sell out. With that failure, I think any plans Hasbro had of using HTS along the lines of Mattycollector died. To call the concept a failure would be a gross understatement. Of all the cancellations/reboots that Joe underwent between 1997 and 2005, DTC was one that really did the brand as a whole in with retailers.

As far as how DTC came about?
Hasbro had a followup to Valor vs Venom called Robot Rebellion. GI Joe was actually coming off a good year with VvV, and there were high hopes about the concept (hence, why both the RHINO and RoCC were developed). I was privy to supposed insider information (take that as you will), which indicated some kickass stuff in development. The "word in the back" was that Walmart didn't want 3.75 anymore (it was performing, just not as big as they wanted. The expanded support of TRU and Target in early 2005 I feel is ample evidence that the brand was on the upswing, just not to whatever level Walmart wanted), and pushed for the development of a new concept (Sigma Six) and to facilitate that push, cut orders on 3.75 to the point Hasbro couldn't justify the line at retail (or pushed Hasbro management to throw their full support behind Sigma Six, which is what Walmart seemed to want). Due to production timetables, Hasbro had a good bit of product ready for retail (a leaked wave 1 sell sheet even made it online), but suddenly, didn't have a venue to sell it. So, Hasbro pushes DTC to use some of the tooling (some of which I suspect was finished and we never saw due to trying to fill collector needs, like less core characters) But as Mike T said, it was a HUGE failure, pretty much dooming any sort of Hasbro collector type service (Transformers also had a couple notable flops as well). The club salvaged the last wave of DTC, to equally dismal performance. DTC pretty much proved that the Joe collector market isn't nearly as big as they made themselves out to be, and the selling stuff at retail will always be Hasbro's first option.

The Club's big mistake (1 of many) is that they chose to pick up the cancelled wave 4 line 2 years after it was supposed to have been released. When wave 4 got cancelled, there was a demand for it. People wanted it. Then 25th hit and people forgot all about it. In comes the club with their over excitement of having this wave. The community in general gave a big "meh" to it even before the club had the figures for sale. Timing is everything and club's timing is terrible on nearly all counts.
