I've read through some of the forums about vintage screws and have seen that some people clean their rusty screws using naval jelly. I was just curious if anyone has used CLR to remove the rust from their figures screws? Since CLR is made for calcium, lime and rust I thought I'd ask some members of the tank and see if they have used it before.

It may sound bizarre, but root beer will also remove the rust from the vintage screws. Put a couple in a small glass of the stuff and watch the rust disappear!

I heard about using naval jelly as well, but I also heard that it was toxic.
As far as the root beer is concerned I've heard using soda on rusty screws in order to get a better grip on them with the screwdriver in order to remove them easier. I've never heard of using root beer to remove the rust though. Very interesting. By the way, not to hijack your thread or anything, but does anyone know anything safe to use in order to remove the rust from the plastic once you remove the rusty screws? Also I was thinking of replacing my screws with new ones, but some members have said that the replacement screws make the holes wider and create new threads in the plastic. Has anyone encountered this problem before? Maybe tyring to remove rust off of the original screws might be a better idea than using the replacement ones.

That's something I'm curious about as well. I personally would try wetting a Q-tip with water but would the root beer for the screws also be safe on the figure's plastic? Last edited by Joe Fan 1; 04-09-2012 at 08:09 PM.. |
