My parents bought my joes. I would pick out something more expensive then bargain down to get joes. I remember $2.97 at Kmart. Didn’t troop build back in the day except I was able to talk them in to getting two 84 Storm Shadow’s. I got the vehicles and Joe headquarters at Christmas and birthdays. Man I miss those days, now I have to fork over the money for my troop building. But I do still have everyone of my old joes and accessories.

My parents got me the figures I had for B-day and Christmas mostly. I can remember "helping" mom pick them for me from Fisher's Big Wheel, which at the time had the greatest toy section. hehe Anyway, I also got some from garage sales when the town sale happened. Mom would give me $5.00 to buy anything I wanted, so I started looking for Joes and SW toys. The first GI Joe I got was a v1 Flash. It took me almost a whole day to lose his visor. :p
I never had two of any figure save for 2 CGs. |

I had a Dutch G.I.Joe Toy Catalog booklet in the A5 format from 1988 which had cool dio pictures with armies of Hydro-Vipers, Astro-Vipers, Iron Grenadiers & Toxo-Vipers.
I was amazed by those catalog pictures as a kid. So many of the same figure, it looked really awesome. I always thought only the toy company could have something like this for their dio's as the figures were a rare find in the toystores. The Joe display in toystores in the Netherlands only had like 20 figures at a time and there were barely any extra armybuilders for sale from what I remember. If there were more armybuilders for sale in the stores I visited back then, it would have changed my view about collecting armybuilders early on, but I wouldn't have had the funds for it anyway. lol I wonder if the same catalog was released in the US. I hope I'll find the old dutch catalog back that I once had. Last edited by synthalus; 11-02-2008 at 08:35 AM.. |

I had to race to the toy department faster than my two brothers. Once in the GI JOE aisle it was a "to the death" match to see who could grab what. After getting poked in the eyes, kicked in the balls and a portion of my hair ripped out I grabbed the coolest figure. Once I had the one then they had to pick a different one (as mom would not be buying multiples... she had some silly idea that we would share or something). So there was no army building. That was the same story every time we went to the store. I could see the clerks now... here comes those savage children again.

it all started in shaker heights, cleveland ohio around the age of 7. i would get money from chores, selling lemondae, etc and before i would go to school in the morning around 7:3o am my mom would drive me to the drugstore/pharmacy where they had a toy aisle. i would buy all my joes early in the morning one by one every couple days or weeks when i could scrape up $ 1.35. i was in heaven back than and it used to snow and be black and dark all winter so i was just totally into my joes, g1 toys and gi joe and transformer cartoons, my imagination those months. it was a great childhood. my parents did a great job. Waves 1-3 i purchased them all in the drug store! One thing my mom always told people about my personality was that when i was a kid, i had all of the gi joe. That I HAD TO HAVE THEM ALL. TRUE TO THIS DAY IN EVERYTHING I DO. I am still trying to figure out if those were the best years of my life. its nuts. with all my achievements, and materialistic crap i have now, there was a magic there, that i share everyday with the raising of my family and kids, the packaging, the cartoons, those toys really made a positive impact on my life. sometimes i get a little of the magic with collecting vintage afa and 25th, and watching my kids play with 25th and yell yo joe.

My parents bought them. Mostly from the Sears and JCPenneys catalogs.

Mostly Christmas and birthdays. Birthdays were good for a few figures, but my folks went absolutely nuts at Christmas, since we didn't get a lot during the year. I remember one year I got the Night Raven, Cobra Wolf, and Snake Mountain plus more than a few figures from both GI Joe and He-Man.
My grandmother one my dad's side also loved to spoil, because she didn't have many grandchildren at the time. She'd buy me tons of Star Wars and He-Man, but didn't seem to like the idea of GI Joe. |
