This is about paying homage to A Real American Hero. Wow where to start. First off Hasbro thank you from the bottom of my heart you helped create so many amazing memories that I had as a kid. Playing with my Joes in my backyard for hours on end. Everything in my backyard could be used to make forts for my Joes to defend and Cobra to try to overtake. Every Saturday morning I would get up at 5 am drag my blanket and pillow out to the living room and set up shop to watch the Gi Joe cartoon while the rest of my family was sleeping.
Then there were the tons of vehicles and figures, I would remember going to Toys R Us as a kid, what an amazing magical place! I can see all the stuff on the selves like it was yesterday. Dad, Mom I want this I want that! And every Christmas and birthdays my parents would not disappoint. They have plenty of home video of me screaming I always wanted this as I would tear open the wrapping paper that covered whatever awesome Gi Joe toys they got me. You guys remember looking through the JC penny and Sears catalogs? I would circle everything I wanted with a marker. Hasbro back in the day ARAH was king! You owned the stores and owned my imagination too! I watched you change with the times and enjoyed the various sub groups that spawned from the main stuff in both figures and vehicles alike. You where loved by Hasbro and well supported with cartoons, comics, commercials for the toys and of course all the toys and figures! A whole generation of kids, now adults loved you and still do. ARAH you stood the watch from 1982-1994 and kept the world safe from Cobra but you didn’t just protect us you reflected the American spirit at the time. Your cartoons taught young boys and girls good vs. evil right vs. wrong. To me you are as American as apple pie or baseball. I grew up as a military kid so ARAH really tied into my childhood. I would see my dad in his uniform and I wanted to be just like him so Gi Joes were the next best thing for me. Funny I ended up joining the military. I’m sure playing with Joes as a kid played some part in that. A Real American Hero I can never thank you enough for the amazing childhood memories you gave me but I wanted to try so again here's to you! Last edited by DaveViper; 02-16-2012 at 02:04 PM.. GI Joe played a major part in my childhood and of course even as an adult. Many of my fondest memories involve ARAH GI Joe. Even when there were times I didn't feel as if I had any friends, I had my Joe's, and that was good enough for me!
A few that come to mind: My 8th birthday party I received the SLAM from a fellow classmate. She was nice, but we never really hung out and I was surprised she even came to the party at all. She was the only kid that got me a Joe toy because she knew I was a big fan of them, and I became a big fan of hers after that. The Christmas I received the Defiant. I'd never seen anything like it. It was huge, and I spent that entire week long break playing battle after battle with that thing. To this day it is one of my prized possessions, and holds a lot of sentimental value to me. I later learned it took my dad almost the entire Christmas Eve night putting it together. Having dinner at my cousins house one evening, he took my brother and I to his room where he showed us a box of Joe's. Many were Joe's I had seen before but didn't own. He was a little older than us, and no longer interested in them. He let my brother and I each pick out a few of our favorites to keep. I chose '86 Gen. Hawk, Sci-Fi, and Life Line. The 8th grade year was one of the worst years of my life. My family had just moved, and I was going to a new school where I had 0 friends. There was one kid in my social studies class that was always kind of a dick to me. He knew I was a big Joe fan and he told me he had a bunch of Joe's that he did't play with anymore, and I offered to buy them from him. For $30.00 I bought a duffel bag of figures including every Joe from 84 and 85. That may have been pricey back in 1993, but it was totally worth the money. He was also less of a dick to me after that. In elemntary school, my grandmother would award my brother and I with Joe's if we got good grades. A's were worth three figures, B's two figures and C's one figure. She came over to our house with a big plastic sack full of figures. I scored Blizzard, Budo, Charbroil, Muskrat, Night Viper, and several others all in one night. Hard work never felt so good!

ARAH GI JOE was the greatest thing growing up. I loved all of it. I made home movies with it... I told myself I'd one day go back and collect it... ARAH
was just superior in all ways to the other toys I had growing up.

I didn't just play GI Joe with Joe's either. I would often play out my own movies inspired by the action movies of the time like Predator, Cliffhanger, Aliens, and Speed.
One such imaginary feature film starred My DEF Shockwave going up against a mad bomber played by Firefly in the edge of my seat thriller called "Rush" Another featured a team of heavily armed soldiers going deep behind enemy lines to destroy a bio-engineering lab, and isntead end up being hunted by mutant killers. This was called "Behind Enemy Lines", and was several years before the Owen Wilson movie. I didn't typically integrate toy lines, and kept them seperate, but I did use Joe figures as Star Wars characters. I had several Star Wars vehicles, but couldnt stand the figures with thier inferior articulation. I used Destro as an evil Sith Lord called Darth Destron, BC Muskrat was an infamous but noble bounty hunter. General Flagg was Han Solo, and Mortal Kombat Sonya Blade was Leia.

Christmas 1983 was the best. I had just turned 9 and all the great sets like the HQ, Skystriker, APC, Dragonfly were gifts that year.
