It's been a while since I went back and really looked at the figures we were all clamoring for from the year 2002 to 2006 or so....
So today I went to good old generalsjoes.com and perused his archives of old figure reviews. My god man. Those figures are just hideous. Abominations. Apart from the Spy Troops Cobra Commander, the whole lot of them are simply repulsive. Terrible proportions, details, colors, and articulation. I guess it was the best we could get at the time....but man.....they did not age well. They look like sad bootlegs more than official Hasbro product. Wow. So hard to believe we were into those at one point. Makes me wonder if the figures will be so awesome in five to ten years that the PoC Snake Eyes will look this bad by comparison.....hard to believe...but perhaps?? |

Not me. LOL.
I collected when I was a kid back in the 80s. I've only been collecting again since the 25th anniversary releases. And with the last few remaining classic ARAH era characters being released, I may quit again. Unless the Retaliation movie line sucks me in. We'll see.

It is only natural... I thought PS1 graphics were the best thing ever at the time. Looking back... I realize... I don't want to look back anymore. LOL. It is the same with toys...

I got suckered in. I sold all my vintage ARAH on ebay to fund my drumset, and later when I wanted to put a small collection of Joes together, it was easier and less expensive to just go to the store and pick up new sculpts.
The only three I have left are VvV Dr. Mindbender, Spytroops Zarana and a DTC Cover Girl. |

Yeah, I have DTC Cover Girl as well. Awesome figure. Would love to get the 30th subscription update, but too expensive.

When I was a kid, I didn't care about the figures other than as drivers for the awesome vehicles. I remember distinctly looking at Zarana on the toy shelf and thinking, "THAT is the reason I don't want figures." The ONLY figure I ever bought was Lt. Falcon and I got a Gen. Hawk for Christmas that year. The attraction of those guys? I thought their camo pattern looked cool. Nothing after that ever impressed me, especially the day-glo vehicles (Swamp Masher aside) and IMO crappy repaints and rebrands like Star Brigade and even worse redesigns like Spy Troops. The FIRST time I ever saw or heard about the 25th was finding wave 1 at my local Kmart: I bought them immediately. I trust my taste to age just fine.

I had this discussion when the 25th came out.
I said that the new line clearly had better sculpts and was shot down by everybody - no ARAH and the rest was much better... Give it a few years and everybody has come to the conclusion that YES 25th, 30th, POC, ROC etc actually has better sculpts.... |

I can't believe I almost had a stroke because I couldn't get a VvV Crimson Guard Troop builder set. If only we'd known!

The figures got better starting with the middle of VVV, then towards the end-DTC, you can see the baby steps towards the 25th line(shoulders/elbows with no visible pins, better proportions, swivel wrists, et al).
Some of the figures yes indeed, did look apalling. The Alley Viper character design looked cool but the figure was the worst Alley Viper ever made. |
