Is there anybody on here who grew up with the original Joes? This entire site seems to be focused on ARAH from 82-87. I never see anybody mentioning the original 12" line. It's always Duke this or Cobra Commander that as if GI Joe didn't exist before 1982.

I didn't grow up with the original but I had the DIC and Desert Shield Duke one. I loved them and still have Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes nice and mint. I however have breached from Hasbro for the most part preferring to buy Dragon, Ultimate and Solder of the World set. I use them as a before GI Joe.

I had Luminos & The Shield from Super Joe. And I really wanted Terron but never got him. But I didn't know they were related to GI Joe at the time. I was too young. They were just cool space figures to me.
Heh heh, "space figures", so that's where my Star Brigade obsession started. |

Ah Star Brigade. Mine started when my father was able to keep what he stopped shop lifters from getting. Countdown belonged to me! Than got some Star Force from Lanard. Those helmets were the coolest. I used Snowstorm as an Astronaut too.

I had one of them with the "Kung-Fu grip" and "realistic hair" when I was very young. I don't remember much about it but I remember when I first saw the commercial for the VAMP and they said "Comes with GI Joe Figure" I thought Clutch was GI Joe cause he also looked nearly the same.
I think the main reason most don't remember that era as fondly is there was less characterization involved. I know what makes ARAH onward is the characters (toon and comic) and they seemed to be more alive. |

Exactly... once you start adding characters and personality, it's much easier to become engrossed in the story.
I'm sure people had great ideas for their 12" Joes, but with a core mythos, people can share much more than their own memories of their own worlds. They can share stories of how they felt about certain characters and factions.

Did the guys that had the 12" Joes when they were kids even bother with the new 3" line?

It was "Action Man" to me, but yes I had dozens of them (literally) during the 1970's. Every time I saved up the 'star points' I sent off for a free basic figure and just bought the uniforms. Had a lot of the vehicles, such as the Sea Wolf, Scorpion Tank and Pursuit Plane too. Favourites were probably the deep sea diver and talking astronaut.
It was my love of these that made me buy into the earliest 3 3/4 inch Action Force figures, which initially were just scaled down Action Men. That line ultimately evolved into GI Joe.

I had the Adventure Team, but Mego was already intruding on Hasbros mojo at that point, so it was only for a few years.

Like I said before on other threads my dad gave me all his 12inch joes from the 60s. The action soldier and action marine stuff.
