I have finally gotten around to adding my first 1990 Sky Patrol vehicle to our collection. The Sky Hawk is probably the only vintage Sky Patrol vehicle that I will ever collect, because I just don't care all that much for the others, (with the Sky Raven being an exception, but too rare/expensive).

I just got one of those to put together and I also have an AFA one. Sky Patrol is my favorite sub team.

It is a metalized coating.
Back in 1990, Hasbro created these Sky Patrol vehicles using colored plastic (for example, the Sky Hawk fuselage is actually green underneath that chrome surface). They used a factory in South America to apply the vacuum metallization. The process is a form of physical vapor deposition (PVD), coating a metal such as aluminum to a non-metallic substrate through evaporation. Hasbro Sky Patrol vehicles were vacuum metalized to a higher quality degree than many other products of that time period, and tend to have retained their luster 30 years later. The exception to this is the Sky Raven vehicle, which was vacuum metalized in the United States, and has a very thin, low quality coating which does not hold up well over time as the other Sky Patrol vehicles do.

The Sky Patrol Sky Hawk and Sky Sharc are pretty nice. I don't like the Sky Raven or Sky Havoc though. The Sky Raven does have a lot of paint loss and is quite expensive if you can even get a complete one. The Sky Havoc doesn't really fit the motif and doesn't look right with the coloring.
I do have to say the 2016 Joe Convention Sky Patrol Skystriker is pretty dope though. |

I considered buying one of the Convention Sky Patrol Sky Strikers too - they really do look great but I just don't have the space or really want to have too many Sky Strikers. I really enjoy this type of back and forth, it reignites my interest in collecting and makes me want to fill in the last needs I have identified for my collection. |
