Yeah, it's a very common issue that a lot of sellers just leave out. It's so common in fact, that in my 20+ years of collecting, there are actually some figures that I've never seen without cracked elbows- the '89 Alley Viper comes to mind.
That doesn't make it right, but it's true. |

Pretty much every figure from 1988 is extremely likely to have cracked elbows.
Supposedly, putting some mineral oil on the plastic will help to prevent this (or prevent it from getting worse), but I've never tried it. Generally speaking, it's better to pose figures with the elbows slightly bent rather than rigid straight. Less strain on the joint, I guess. |

Agreed. Screw rust, o-rings, elbow cracks, hell, even some discoloration does nothing to put me off. Thumbs and crotches are out for sure, though. I also hate when a figure's listed as complete and has discreetly broken accessories- this has happened to me twice now with the Astro Viper's hose pegs. Really burns my ass.
And yeah, I had the exact same problem with the Astro Viper I bought, didn't find out about the broken pegs until it arrived. Quote:
On the plus side, I can say I've NEVER seen a loose elbow joint on an O-ring figure. Biceps, shoulders, neck, hips, and knees yes...but never a loose elbow. So that's the trade off we get I suppose |

This was someone who looks to sell a lot of joes. Their account is wheeljackslab if anyone has heard of. They have really good descriptions, so that's why I found it annoying that there wasn't any mention

I have two or three Lanard Lazer Force figures where cracked elbows actually caused the lower half of the arm to fall completely off.

I have seen a few Joes where the arm broke off entirely at the elbow joint, but my earlier comment was just noting that I hadn't seen Joes with a loose elbow joint (elbows broken all the way through notwithstanding). Last edited by Cryoguns; 08-12-2021 at 05:34 PM.. |

Elbow cracks are probably my biggest issue with vintage collecting. Over my years of collecting I have noticed that certain years seem to be a little more notorious for elbow cracks - it seems the 88-90 figs really suffer from this (TF/PP are both notoriously bad).
JOSH_Z - Thanks for the mineral oil tip. I will have to try that out. I had always wondered if applying some sort of oil would help with the elbow cracks. |

I guess on the plus side I dropped collecting back in the 80s with the 87 line. Had some 88, but not many, so anything after that is of no interest to me
