Back then when me and others in our early 30s, we were kids in the 1980s and were shocked by the tons of G.I. Joe figures and Star Wars and he Man figures.
From 1984 to 1988 you would see rows and rows of GI Joe figures on the pegs like a gazillion where you had to dig through on the pegs to see what else there was. |

Finding a rare figure, convincing a parent to buy it and then bragging to your friends because there was no internet for them to buy one

The selection and the amout of retailers that sold GI Joe toys. It was the golden age of GI JOE. It's something that we will never see again. Those were good times.

I remember rows and rows of figures and aisles of vehicles.

Being overwhelmed at what was on the shelves and having a hard time deciding what to pick with my limited funds (my allowance).
I also miss the prices. Figures most places were $2.99. Vehicles were rarely more than $15, usually around $10. What I dont miss, my limited resources. |

Regional stores like Hills, Jamesway, Fisher's Big Wheel and the like were always stocked full of Joes. Kmart was still there, and there were plenty of other toy stores to go to where there wasn't a Toys'R'Us. I even remember True Value carrying some of these - this is where I got my Zartan and Swamp Skier. There were always a lot more places to go looking for Joes, and the selection was always better. Now, you have to go to either Walmart, Target or TRU, and they might have three pegs with a few figures hanging from them if you're lucky. Big Lots, Dollar General, Tuesday Morining, Ross, TJ Max and Marshalls still have a fair amount of the ROC figures (and 25th in some cases) at somewhat better prices - hopefully the same will be true after POC and 30th moves from major retail.
But I think the thing I miss the most is that GI Joe still had some longevity attached to the product name. It never seemed like the brand would fade away, even in '94, the year I graduated from high school. Despite the hideous day-glo colors and endless sub-teams, there was still a large amount of product put out and there was always something available to the discerning fan. It seemed like the line would go on forever. I hope it does, despite the wavering interest in fickle fans and kids that prefer gadgets over toys.

I also miss the element of surprise - there was no internet to tell you what figures would be coming out. You might get a heads up from the Marvel comic series or the card backs, but there were no guarantees. I also enjoyed all the mail-order/flag point bonus stuff.

I miss actually playing with toys! I collect them, I set them up, I build environments...I have an entire toy room that has become one big diorama...but thats it hardly ever touch them! I do still love the excitement of finding one in a store! I rarely ever buy off the internet because of this. It is an instant smack back to 1983 for me! LOL!
