Hey, that doesn't sound too bad. don't be too disheartened, you can do it. : )
he sounds like a s*tty seller though. they arnt all like that. ive had a few bad experiences but mostly positive on ebay. i got to a point where i asked every seller to "pack with enough material so it cant rattle around at all," even with my Rattler, ironically.

Of course, there is the flip side that is really annoying in that the seller fills the box with peanut foam and it all breaks and the vehicle wasn't bagged. I will always bag the items and then put the peanut packing over it so you don't get the pieces breaking into the item. I've had some where I had to pour it all out and dig through to make sure I didn't miss anything.

alyosha from "broken arrow toys" was making repro vertical vanes, but i think he is MIA at the moment. some peopple have bad experiences dealing with him, i must warn. i had no problems with my order but a search will result in many threads related to it.
i have a pair he made, i also have a set of vintage vanes in good enough shape to keep (i think). i might be willing to sell the repros eventually when i clean up and assemble the whale.

FYI
How to remove old decals and refresh your vintage plastic arah stuff with baby oil... its nuthin fancy but it works for me! first remove any unwanted decals. i usually completely disassemble the vehicle. use baby oil when disassembling it so you dont cause stress marks or break anything. i use a small portion cut out of an old t shirt squirted in baby oil (use a small container to hold the rag) and lather it all over and let it sit for however long you want/need. old dry caked on residue is the worst and takes longest to loosen up. if you vehicle has a lot of nooks and crannies use a toothbrush soaked to get into those areas. a q-tip could reach the hardest ares. after it has soaked you need to remove the sticker residue and baby oil using rubbing alcohol. another larger piece of t shirt soaked will work (keep this in a different container). this is where you scrub off any sticker residue. you may need to use more than one small rag here with alcohol to get all the oil off if one rag becomes too saturated with oil. i also let it sit for a day and then repeat the alcohol process until i had the oil removed satisfactorily. to get the oil out of the nooks and crannies use a tooth brush and flush with warm water. ***for tougher residue you can let the item soak for over 24 hours in baby oil. or just use goo gone which wont need to sit as long and will come off easier.*** ****for the toughest residue GooGone works great and wont damage your plastic!**** i also relube the moving parts (missile launcher tabs, plane innards, landing gear etc) again with baby oil and a q-tip upon reassembly and maybe the tabs that hold the body together. hope that helps!

I just acquired a Whale that's pretty beat up, so if you need some parts, let me know. I'll be adding them to my b/s/t list soon, and I'd rather trade than sell.

I think if you asked any, if not every GI Joe collector about the subject of "Really good condition" and even worse "100% complete MINT" there'd be a tale of woe attached to it. I used to collect Star Wars for a good 25 years, it was NOTHING like this. The main difference is the amount of parts that make up each toy, combined with the fact that every toy seems to have atleast 1 generic fault that affects it's design. I live in the UK, I managed to win on eBay a Whale about 6 months ago. It was listed as "Action Force Hovercraft, boxed, really good condition, complete". I think I won it for £40 ($65). When it turned up it was mostly as advertized, no scrathces infact I don't think the toy had been played with, beautiful box, instructions and stickers still on the sheet! Amazing... maybe not. Both vanes where broken, the tabs on the recon sled door were both broken, no figure, no sled, no gun mounts etc... I've spent about another $65 getting parts, the problem being that my one was the later UK Re-release in a lighter colour so the replacement parts are a different colour! Point I'm trying to make is that most of the time you'll be buying multiples of the same toy and "Cherry picking" the best pieces to complete toys. (My Defiant took 3 toys and about $1500 to complete).
Alot of dealers just don't really pay that much attention to the smaller details and it's very hard to get facts from them! I asked a dealer the other day "Does your Persuader have all the tabs that hold the main cannon to the turret" I got the reply "What's the turret". It's very frustrating and I'm afraid costly. It makes it really nice when you actually get something that is mint and is 100% complete. Last edited by Narius P; 04-01-2011 at 04:30 PM.. |

The WHALE is a great toy (lotsa play value). Hopefully the 30th anniversary being a fiscal-year-long celbration will enable a re-release of the original. If not hopefully next year's G.I.Joe 2 movie sequel will bring on a bigger badder one = http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...d-you-buy.html

ive got to say with MOST of my purchases i had no real problems. i have almost a complete arah vehicle collection from 1982-1986 with the mobile command center from 1987 thrown in. no flagg though.
