In regards to the Cobra SHOCK trooper, I can't recall which excited me the most; seeing pictures beforehand or actually getting him in hand? I saw him as the NEW standard for Cobra infantry. None-the-less, I literally 'backed the truck up' on this figure! Whether you like the long neck or had to swap the head, he's PURRR-FECT!!!
Now Hasbro reveals two new, yet familiar figures; 'Cobra the Enemy' and 'Cobra Viper'. At first I wanted... errr, needed twelve of each! Then I started noticing similarities of the two new figures that made it hard to differentiate them from their counterpart and justify buying them. The new Cobra Enemy doesn’t standout from ST and since I troop built SE (W3) the new version seemed like a step backwards in MY Joe-verse. After analyzing the new Cobra Viper I realized that the idea of a new Cobra Viper was actually better than the reality since he doesn't compare to the ’09 5-pack ‘Cobra set’ Cobra Viper with the chrome visor and flesh molded arms. The only relevance these two new figures would have to me would be replacing their counterparts in my 25th collection but since I prefer the classic look… it’s a pass on both of these two new figures. What do you think? Is there a big enough contrast? How do theses two new figures fit into your collection or Joe-verse, if at all? Yes! I troop built POC Wave 3 SE... IMO, the Shock Trooper is the best of all the PoC Cobra Infantry

None of the above
I totally hate the stupid Shock Troopers. They'd be cool if they were Joes but they don't fit in with Cobra at all. They look just like Beachhead. I haven't cared about the original Cobra soldiers ever since the Vipers replaced them. I'm interested in the new Viper & I'll probably buy 1 or 2. But I'm satisfied with my 4 HOH Vipers & 2 Crimson Vipers from the convention pack. I don't need to be wasting $8 or $9 on figures that I already have. I don't care if the packaging is different or if there are tiny bits & pieces that have been remolded. A Viper is a Viper & that character has already been checked off my want list. In my little world, I've kinda have my own play on things where Cobra tends to work in the shadows and GI Joe is a smaller elite special forces/CIA kill team, versus everyone having fighters, tanks, etc. So to me the urban feel of the Shock Trooper is what I have been waiting my whole life (I can see several of these climbing out a van to raid some corporate office or something) for. Not for the girraff head (which I've gotten rid of) and most of the equipment, but the body and vest. To make this guy:
http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...a-trooper.html While I'll agree that the new trooper New Enemy looks good, it hacks off of Joe parts, which I hate. I also hate it when figures that come with multiple sidearms, like the Jungle Viper. So The Enemy having a pistol in his harness like the original AND his hip is overkill to me. BUT, as you can see that my Ultimate Cobra Trooper doesn't have a holster at all, and I really want him to have one. So my only purpose of getting ANY run of the mill Cobra Trooper is for kit bashing to try and make my guy as awesome as possible. And to be honest I love the dark-dark blue of the Shock Trooper versus the traditional Cobra blue... But I'll probably buy several The Enemy for just the heads alone... |

I have (5) 25th v5 Troopers w/ an Officer as Squad Leader.
I'm planning on getting (5) POC Cobra Enemy, perhaps using the Bo80's DVD Paratrooper as Squad Leader? I am content with my single Shock Trooper. Well, I bought 4 more, but only for their shields... The only Vipers I own are Arctic and Python Patrol. I have no plans to change this...unless a sleeved Viper comes along? |

This is a tough one. Of course I want to go old school and say the NEW Cobra Enemy but I'm really gonna have to wait and see. The NEW Cobra Troops use existing parts from already great figures, but those parts weren't originally intended for the Cobra Trooper. Things great about the Shock Trooper may not work for the Cobra Trooper. Perfect point: the zipper going through the cobra sigil. Those little details just irk me. Plus Hasbro is obviously still cutting every corner, half-assing it with the NEW Cobra Trooper.
-Why doesn't the NEW Cobra Trooper have form fitting web-gear like every other POC fig? Why the old lame 25th gravity-defying suspenders? -Why doesn't the NEW Cobra Trooper have the better scaled, superbly-sculpted Dragonuv that the Cap Movie Winter Soldier comes with?? Why the crappy '82 molded one? Right now Shock Troopers are still coming out ahead. This could change. I'm hoping so, I want a good modern blueshirt because we sure haven't got one yet. My TRU Cobra Infantry sets are still in commission.

I have pretty distinct differences between the roles and backgrounds of the blueshirts, vipers and shock troopers in my 'verse. Because of this, I actually like the way they have made the new figures.
Blueshirts are civilian recruits into the Cobra army. I like to think of them as more militia than a regular army. They are also cheap for Cobra to employ and replace, so Cobra doesn't really bother with giving them much training or superior weaponry. Plus since my Cobra uses a special "recycling" program (see Cobra is downsizing thread for more info on this), these guys just end up being cannon fodder for the most part. Vipers are military recruits. These guys all have formal military backgrounds and thus are more useful to Cobra. They tend to be used in the more critical jobs in an operation with blueshirts usually acting as the distraction. Cobra spends a bit more money on them and does give them more advanced weaponry and armor so they will be much more effective on the battlefield. Shock Troopers are police recruits. They are usually police personnel who have been removed from their previous jobs due to issues such as tampering with evidence, theft of evidence (especially drugs and cash) or brutality claims. Most ST's work as police officers on Cobra islan, Springfield or other Cobra controlled towns. However, some do work undercover in other police stations to help facilitate Cobra operations in their area. These undercover ST's also assist Cobra in its property acquisition by raiding proerties Cobra is interested in and planting evidence so that the property can be seized and sold to Cobra for cheap. They also assist Dr.Mindbender in finding candidates for his experiments. |
